Intel Hyper Threading: Mit ili zbilja

Uvod

Dosad je Intel izbacivao samo hardwerske optimizacije za svoje procesore pod nazivima MMX i SSE, dok je ovo prvo hardversko poboljšanje izvedeno još od pojave prvih Pentium procesora, ako ne računamo implementaciju cache memorije na jezgru i smanjivanje proizvodnog procesa. Svi smo čuli za višeprocesorske sustave koji imaju mogućnost dijeljenja operacija na nekoliko procesora tako da je sveukupno procesorsko vrijeme ustvari zbroj svih procesora na samom stroju, otprilike kao da na mašini od četiri procesora radi jedan koji je četverostruko brži. Za upotrebu takvih mašina dosad su vam bili potrebni neki serverski chipsetovi i neki od procesora koji i nisu baš povoljni za kupnju (MP od AMD-a ili Xeon od Intela). I same aplikacije moraju biti pisane tako da podržavaju višeprocesorski mod jer ih inače one same neće prepoznavati (što će se pokazati jednom od boljki HT tehnologije u daljnjem tekstu) više od jednog procesora. Tako da sa neoptimiziranom aplikacijom ustvari iskorištavate samo jedan procesor dok je drugi totalno nevidljiv za sam program ili obavlja istovjetni posao kao i prvi procesor.Ta tehnologija je još uvijek aktualna na velikim poslužiteljima i kompjutorima koji zahtjevaju veliku procesorsku snagu. Sve do sada jer dolazimo do najnovijeg Intelovog djeteta.

HT ili Hyper Threading je najnovija Intelova izmišljotina. Na svu sreću nije nikakva patka na koju bi se trebali navući kupci nego uistinu svrsishodno rješenje. Cijela stvar se bazira na višenitnom programskom kodu. Opazite da se ne govori o višeprocesorskom nego o višenitnom kodu. Sami procesor sadrži dvije odvojene procesorske jedinice koje mogu u realnom vremenu obaviti dva zadatka (znači dvostruko više od jednog procesora) Višenitni programski kodovi mogu vrlo dobro iskoristiti taj način rada jer istovremeno izvršavaju dvije funkcije. Ajmo uzeti banalni primjer koji inače ne drži vodu u realnom životu ali nam slikovito može pojasniti stvar. Uzmimo da reproduciramo neki video zapis koji na mediju ima separatno zapisan video i zvučni zapis ali koji su kodirani-kompresirani. Kako procesor pristupa jednom pa drugom zapisu odvojeno, mora doći do zastoja i trzanja slike. Ali ako procesor može istovremeno obavljati dekodiranje slike i zvuka, do zastoja ne dolazi jer se obadvije funkcije izvršavaju istovremeno. Otprilike bi sve to trebalo biti tako i u realnom životu. Za to vam treba neki od Windowsa (nikako ne 98 i ME) i program koji iskorištava HT.

Moram priznati da sam ovu sliku posudio sa Tom's Hardwarea jer nikako nisam sa našom digitalnom kamerom tipa Fred Kamenko uspio poslikati ovaj detalj. Da priče o dva virtualna procesora nebi bile samo priče eto i dokaza. I sama ploča vidi dva procesora brzine 3.06GHz. Naravno, da biste vidjeli ovo, morate imati uključen HT. Na pločama koje su u mogućnosti prihvatiti HT procesore, postoji postavka koja omogućuje uključivanje i isključivanje HT-a. Pomalo čudna opcija ali barem korisna za nas po pitanju benchanja.
