Hlađenje matičnih ploča

Ponekad je vrlo teško postići stabilnost procesora i matične ploče kod visokih FSB (Front Side Bus) brzina. Kritične brzine danas počinju već od 133 MHz na i440BX i VIA Apollo Pro pločama, a od oko 150 MHz na i8xx chipset pločama. Osim procesora, na tim pločama ima još dva važna chipa koji se poprilično griju, a visoke temperature imaju velik utjecaj na njihov rad. Povećanjem temperature mijenja im se frekvencijska karakteristika, što opet za posljedicu ima nestabilnost cijele ploče.

Prvi od njih je standardni North Bridge (NB) chip. Osim procesora, to je sigurno najvažniji chip na ploči. Obično se nalazi vrlo blizu procesoru. Preko njega razgovaraju svi dijelovi računala, od procesora do memorije, I/O magistrala i grafike. Većina današnjih ploča dolazi s hladilom na NB chipu, ali to malo zeleno (ponekad može biti i druge boje, ali je uvijek aluminijsko) hladilo nažalost više djeluje kao izolator protiv hlađenja nego kao uređaj za smanjenje temperature. Skoro sva su konkavna ili čak valovita s donje strane, i bez ikakve termalne paste između njih i NB chipa. Tako se stvara mali ali efikasni izolatorski sloj zraka od skoro pola milimetra između hladila i NB chipa.

Northbridge hladilo

Taj problem se rješava vrlo lagano. Potrebno je skinuti to hladilo s ploče i izbrusiti ga brusnim papirom na ravnoj podlozi. Zatim vrlo tanko namazati NB chip termalnom pastom, i vratiti hladilo nazad. Aktivno hlađenje (zasebnim ventilatorom) je vrlo rijetko potrebno jer uvijek jedan dio zračne struje od procesorskog hladnjaka prolazi preko našeg hladila. Ako sada primijetite da je u radu računala hladilo znatno toplije, znači da ste proceduru dobro napravili.
