Intel Pentium 4 "Prescott" - Vrući kamen spoticanja

Nakon par neispavanih dana dobro da smo uopće bili u stanju napisati ovaj članak. No, htjeli smo što prije objaviti test Prescotta i vjerovatno to uspjeli prvi u Hrvatskoj. Da nije naše "Internet prednosti" bili bi zadnji jer smo sample Prescott procesora primili tek nakon tri glavna hrvatska IT časopisa. Nismo sigurni da zaslužujemo tek četvrto mjesto po važnosti u lijepoj našoj, no što je tu je. No, malo smo skrenuli s teme - ovaj članak posvećen je novom Intel procesoru - Prescottu.

 

0.09 mikronska tehnologija

Kada je izašao prvi P4 procesor odmah je postalo jasno da je Intel zaključio da je najbitnija stvar za jedan procesor frekvencija na kojoj radi. Konceptu "što više GHz-a to bolje" podređena je i cijela arhitektura P4 procesora. Prescott nije iznimka - dapače, daleko od toga. Da bi što prije ostvario što veći takt, Intel je puno uložio u svoju 0.09 mikronsku tehnologiju proizvodnje. Intel je u ovom području već dugo lider i tvrtka koja prva počinje s proizvodnjom procesora u slijedećoj nižoj stepenici mikronske tehnologije. AMD-u u prosjeku treba bar godinu za pariranje. Po nama je upravo novi tehnološki proces stvar za koju Intel zaslužuje najviše pohvala. Osim što je smanjio veličinu tranzistora, Intel je uspio smanjiti i dužinu tranzistorskih mostova s 60 na 50nm. Samim tim smanjena je fizička veličina a ubrzan rad. Naravno, smanjenje poput ovog donosi veći probleme s "curenjem" signala no Intel je i to smanjio boljom izolacijom. Kao još jedna zanimljiva stvar tu je strained silicon tehnologija koja se bazira na tome da su silikonske latice tranzistorskog kanala rastegnute čime je povećan razmak između atoma. Zbog većeg razmaka elektroni prolaze silikonskom laticom s manje otpora čime se povećava brzina a smanjuje toplina. Novost je i to što Prescott ima sedam bakrenih nivoa, naspram šest na Northwoodu (ili devet na Athlonima 64). Ipak po nama je najveće dostignuće to što je Intel uspio napraviti proizvodni proces tako da mu je bilo potrebno zamijeniti samo 25% opreme u postojećim pogonima. Drugim riječima, troškovi su minimizirani koliko god se moglo. Uz to se čini da je yield vrlo dobar za tako novi proizvodni proces. No, novi proizvodni proces nije bio dovoljan da omogući povećanje takta.

Pipeline

Prije nego što je uopće procesor lansiran o njemu se znalo da će biti rađen u 0.09 mikronskoj tehnologiji, da će imati više cache memorije spram Northwood jezgre (ali manje od P4 Extreme Edition procesora) te da će doći s 13 novih instrukcija koje su strpane pod ime SSE3. Ono što se nije znalo jest da će pipeline na Prescottu biti produžen, i to za preko 50%. Intel P4 procesori su od početka bili dosta kritizirani zbog svog dugog i neefikasnog pipelinea koji je bio dug 20 "stanica" a na Prescottu taj isti pipeline ima bar 31 "stanicu". Ukoliko se pitate zašto smo rekli "bar 31" odgovor je jednostavan - postoje indikacije da je 31 ustvari više jer da neke "stanice" pipelinea Intel nije iz ovog ili onog razloga ubrojio u total. Produženi pipeline je tu samo zato da bi se omogućio viši takt - nekog drugog pametnog razloga nema. Kako se cijela NetBurst arhitektura P4 procesora vrti oko višeg takta, ovakav potez ne čudi. Ipak, po nama je to vrlo ne-elegantan brute force prilaz problemu i nikako nam se ne sviđa. Zbog većeg pipelinea P4 procesori postaju sve više i više neefikasni. Nemoj te misliti da Intel toga nije svjestan. Zbog toga je prvo izmišljen HyperThreading - tehnologija koja nije tu jer se nekome svidjela ideja virtualnog SMP-a nego je tu da poveća popunjenost pipelinea i time smanji neefikasnost procesora (i poveća performanse). Iz tog razloga sve novo što Prescott donosi je tu samo iz jednog razloga - da smanji negativan utjecaj dužeg pipelinea. Veći cache, nove instrukcije - sve su to novi trikovi da se obuzda nestašni pipeline. Vrlo žalosno ali tako je to kada u jednom trenutku marketing kaže "ono što prodaje procesore je viši takt" i onda se po tome treba napraviti cijela mikroarhitektura.
