- IBM-ovi novi "p" serveri -

Zašto nas je predstavljanje novih "p" servera toliko zanimalo? Pa zato što su ovo prvi mainstream (UNIX i Linux) serveri koji koriste tehnologiju virtualizacije sistema koja je prije bila namijenjena samo mainframe računalima. No što je zapravo virtualizacija? Riječ je o svojevrsnom particioniranju, u prvom redu procesora, a samim tim i samog računala. Svaka se particija s gledišta krajnjeg korisnika ponaša kao zasebno računalo što vodi ka efikasnijem iskorištavanju sistemskih resursa koji se alociraju dinamički, zavisno o zahtjevima korisnika pojedine particije i deklariranih prioriteta. Na ovaj način korisnik, odnosno korisnici, u potpunosti iskorištava mogućnosti hardvera. Moglo bi se reći da je virtualizacija samo slijedeći korak nakon SMP-a (kao i virtualnog SMP-a kao što je Intelov HyperThreading). Nakon virtualizacije jedini moćniji oblik, uvjetno rečeno, multi-taskinga jest grid computing. Koncept virtualizacije se odlično slaže sa IBM-ovim principom On Demand poslovanja u kojem korisnik rabi i plaća samo onoliko IT resursa koliko mu je stvarno potrebno.

Tina Easton promovira "p" seriju IBM-ovih servera

Nova generacija pServera je bazirana na IBM-ovim Power5 procesorima. Dotični procesori su izrađeni 130-nanometarskim SOI procesom, a rade na taktu od 1,5 do 1,9 GHz. Svaki se procesor sastoji od dvije jezgre koje imaju podršku za multi-threading (Intelov HT je također muti-threading tehnologija). Dakle svaki od ovih procesora operativni sustav (AIX5L v5.2/v5.3, Red Hat Linux, Novell SuSe Linux) "vidi" kao četiri logička procesora. IBM Micro Partitioning, dio Virtualization Enginea, omogućava korisnicima da procesor "podijele" na maksimalno 10 dijelova ili particija sa preciznošću od 1%. Na ovim se particijama mogu "vrtiti" različiti operativni sustavi što nas opet dovodi do veće efikasnosti korištenja skupog servera. Valja napomenuti da se ograničenje od 10 particija odnosi samo na jednu jezgru što znači da ako primjerice koristite sistem sa osam procesora odnosno 16 fizičkih jezgri, možete kreirati do 160 particija.

Mada je Power5 procesore moguće povezivati u prilično golema SMP okruženja (maksimalno 64 fizička odnosno 128 logičkih procesora) IBM je u Umagu prezentirao samo tri modela iz nove "p" serije - p5-520, p5-550 i p5-570. Model 520 ima jedan Power5 procesor koji radi na 1,65 GHz i može adresirati 32 GB memorije (naravno, radi se 2-way SMP sistemu budući da procesor ima dvije jezgre). Model 550 se može opremiti sa dva Power5 procesora takta 1,65 GHz (4-way SMP mašina) koji mogu adresirati 64 GB memorije. Najjači predstavljeni model - p5-570 - je u najskupljem izdanju 16-way SMP računalo u koje je moguće ugraditi 1,5, 1,65 ili 1,9-gigahercne Power5 procesore.

IBM-ova zvijer izbliza

Tijekom predavanja o novim serverima gđa. Easton je vrlo direktno govorila o nadmoći novih IBM servera iz "p" serije. Pod direktno mislimo na izjave poput "naš p5-570 tuče HP-ov SuperDome u SPEC OMP2001 testu i to za 335%", a ne neko generičko hvalisanje u smislu "naši sistemi imaju bolje performanse od sistema konkurencije". Sve u svemu IBM-ova nova p5 serija drži prvo mjesto u 35 standardnih industrijskih benchmark aplikacija što stvarno nije mala stvar. Moramo spomenuti i jednu jako zanimljivu izjavu gđe. Easton. Budući da joj je posao promoviranje servera zasnovanih na Power procesorima, na prezentaciji je spomenula jednu vrlo zgodnu shemu uvjeravanja kupaca u nadmoć IBM-ove tehnologije. Potencijalnim kupcima tijekom razgovora često pokaže nekoliko IBM-ovih starih procesorskih roadmapova na kojima je jasno moguće vidjeti da je svaki najavljeni procesor izdan u točno navedeno vrijeme. Da li je to svjedoči o IBM-ovoj pouzdanosti? Mi mislimo da da.

Manny i Tina na presici

Kad je došao red na pitanja mi smo se po običaju malo previše razbahatili. S obzirom da tržište servera nije naše područje, postavili smo govornici par pitanja vezanih uz IBM-ovu tehnologiju izrade procesora, trenutne ugovore i suradnju sa AMD-om, stajalište o najavljenim tehnologijama virtualizacije AMD-a (kodno ime projekta Pacifica) i Intela (kodno ime projekta - Vanderpool), IBM-ovim planovima za razvoj SSDOI (Strained Silicon Directly On Insulator) tehnologije te načinu licenciranja softvera za procesore sa više jezgri. Od svih pitanja dobili smo odgovor na samo jedno i to zadnje. Gđa. Easton je izjavila da su proizvođači softvera generalno podijeljeni na dvije jednake grupe - oni koji licenciraju softver po utoru za procesor i oni koji licenciraju softver po jezgri. Što se tiče IBM-a, tvrtka neke aplikacije licencira po jezgri, a neke po utoru za procesor - zavisno na primjeni pojedine aplikacije.

Još malo i rukica je opet gore

Bombardiranje sa pitanjima sa naše strane nastavilo se i na press konferenciji koju su zajedno održali gđa. Easton i gdin Manny Arino, direktor globalne prodaje softvera za Linux. Budući da ostali novinari nisu bili zainteresirani za postavljanje bilo kakvih pitanja, iskoristili smo priliku i ponovo pokušali dobiti odgovore na naša pitanja. Nažalost, niti ovaj nismo imali sreće budući da nam niti gđa. Easton niti gdin Arino nisu mogli pružiti željene informacije. S druge strane, čini se da smo zbog entuzijastičnog nastupa dobili peticu iz zalaganja pa smo nakon pressice dobili par vizitki i ponudu da porazgovaramo sa inženjerima u IBM-ovim razvojnim labaratorijima u Austinu (Texas, SAD). Što će biti od toga još uvijek ne znamo, ali uskoro planiramo iskoristiti ponudu pa što bude, bude.
