Voodoo3 3000 overclocking

- Overclocking i benchmark -

Sada kada smo ugradili ventilator bili smo sigurni da ima dovoljno protoka zraka da toplinu hladila rasprši u kućište. Ostalo ovisi o drugim ventilatorima u kućištu da topli zrak ispuhnu van a hladan upuhuju (više o tome u drugom članku). Bilo je vrijeme da ovu karticu provučemo kroz testove i overclock-amo. Download-ali smo mali freeware utility za overclock-iranje Voodoo3 kartica i odlučili otkriti gornju granicu. Nakon nekoliko restart-ova i zamrznutih benchmark-a otkrili smo da najviše možemo postići 176MHz. Imali smo jedino Expendable instaliran pa smo tu igru koristili za sve benchmark-e. Evo timedemo izvještaja sa 176MHz:

Korišten je računalni sustav P2/333 @ 515Mhz, Abit BX6r2, 128MB CAS2 PC100 RAM, IBM 10.1GB 7200rpm HDD, Win98 SE.

176MHz dobro zvuči ali nadali smo se i boljem. Ne samo zato što volimo brzinu, nego što smo čuli priče kako se ove kartice daju dobro overclock-ati. Pretpostavljamo da nisu sve baš tako dobre, ili te priče nisu baš istinite. U svakom slučaju, odlučili smo poduzeti nešto u vezi toga. Vjerojatno već znate koliko je bitno imati dvije što ravnije plohe za što bolji prijenos topline. Kada bi bile savršeno ravne nebi uopće trebalo stavljati termalu pastu između da popuni sve sitne neravnine između ta dva predmeta. Nabavili smo brus-papir, malo vode, i krenuli brusiti. Prvo smo izbrusili hladilo, koristeći tri vrste brus-papira. Za početak smo koristili 240, a za finiš 600 (to je bio najslabiji koji smo uspjeli naći, ako nađete slabiji naša preporuka je da koristite njega za finiš). Pri kraju smo površinu namočili vodom - za to postoji vrlo dobar razlog - naime uvijek će se naći malene čestice prašine i smeća koje će pri brušenju ostaviti trag na površini, a korištenjem vode to se izbjegava. Stoga za blistavu i ravnu plohu na kraju namočite površinu. Izravnali smo hladilo i čip najbolje što smo mogli, te ovaj put stavili i malo termalne paste.

Nakon toga pokrenuli smo računalo i prebacili na veći takt. 178MHz prošlo je bez problema. Evo Expendable timedemo izvještaja:

Zatim smo prešli na 181MHz. Sve je radilo odlično:

Pokušali smo i 183MHz (brzina Voodoo3 3500). Mogli se igrati nekoliko minuta no tada bi se stroj zarznuo. Imamo osjećaj da se može postići i 183mhz stabilno ali smo vjerojatno došli do stupnja kada 6ns (166MHz) memorija kartice igra ulogu. Tu smo stali - 181MHz savršeno stabilno. Uzevši u obzir da je cijena Voodoo3 3500 gotovo duplo veća od Voodoo3 3000 mislim da smo odlično prošli. Čak i da smo ostali na tvorničkoj frekvenciji kartice.

Iz puke znatiželje kupili smo 40x40x20mm ventilator u zamjenu za stari i pokrenuli karticu na 181MHz. Sve je radilo bez ikakvih problema. Nema potrebe za pretjerivanjem, čak je i mali (relativno) ventilator dovoljan za stabilan rad kartice. Postavili smo termistor na Voodoo3 čip da točno izmjerimo temperaturu, i koliku korist imamo od ventilatora na kartici, te da li je moguće karticu koristiti i bez ventilatora.

Rezultati su bili zapanjujući. Temperatura sistema tokom testova bila je 26C. Temperatura čipa u Windowsima bila je 39C, a nakon 30 minuta igranja Expendable-a narasla je na 41C. Dakle prilično konstantna. Zatim smo maknuli ventilator i nastavili mjeriti temperaturu. Odmah je počela rasti ali je zadržala stabilnost u Windowsima. Pokrenuli smo Expendable, i nakon 3 minute igra se zamrzla, pri temperaturi kartice od 55C! Naprosto je nevjerojatno da je dodavanje ventilatora dovoljno za 14C razlike u temperaturi. Brzo smo vratili ventilator i temperatura se u roku jedne minute spustila na 42C.

Stavljanje ventilatora uistinu puno pomaže i omogućava Vam da svoju karticu tjerate do krajnjih granica. Ali pritom treba razmisliti da li je to uistinu vrijedno truda. Kao što možete vidjeti razlika između 166MHz i 181MHz je u prosjeku 4.75 FPS-a. Možemo vas uvjeriti da nećete vidjeti razliku, osim u vrlo kompleksnim scenama gdje možete primjetiti kako 166 zastajkuje, a na 181 će Vam sve proći glatko. Naš prijedlog je da stanete kada Vam paše. Ako mislite da je pretjerano brusiti hladilo i čip onda nemojte. Samo priključivanje ventilatora donijet će Vam dovoljno megahertz-a iz vaše Voodoo kartice.
