i815 ekspres test

U prošlom članku o matičnim pločama bavili smo se usporedbom dvaju Intelovih čipseta: BX i 815. Bolju ploču je bilo lako odabrati i BX je odnio čistu pobjedu. Ovaj put problem je puno veći jer je na okupu 6 ploča baziranih na 815 čipsetu koje treba obraditi.

Na početku da kažemo nešto o samom čipsetu.

Ploče su bazirane na Intelovom uratku koji se odaziva na ime 815. Postoje dva tipa čipseta : 815 i 815E. Razlika koju donosi E verzija je dodatna podrška za ATA100 diskove, dva dodatna USB porta, CNR utor za podršku mreže i proširenje ugrađenog zvučnog sustava s 2 na 6 (5+1) kanala.

Intel očito polaže velike nade u čipset jer je to jedina proizvodna linija koja je usmjerena prema donjem i srednjem dijelu tržišta koje donosi i najviše dobiti. Čipset donosi podršku za najnovije PIII procesore koji rade na 133 MHz FSB u obliku AGP množitelja 1/2 , AGP 4x i podršci za PC133 SDRAM. Naravno, to ne znači da stari dobri Celeroni neće raditi na i815 pločama. Naprotiv.

Ali nije zlato sve što sija jer postoje ograničenja: PC133 RAM je moguće instalirati samo u prva dva utora (u druga dva se tada ne mogu stavljati više nikakavi DIMM-ovi ili ako se popunjavaju svi utori memorija mora biti PC100) i maksimum je 512 MB.

i82815 GMCH (Graphics and Memory Controller Hub) sadrži ugrađenu grafičku karticu, ostatak nekadašnje i752 grafičke kartice koja je tebala zamijeniti i740 seriju.Ugrađena grafika koristi sistemsku memoriju u količini od 8, 16, 32 ili 64 MB. Ugrađena grafika je dovoljna za desktop potrebe (rad u Office-u ili slično), ali samo do 24-bitne dubine boja. Za neke ozbiljnije aplikacije (čitaj igrice) potrebno je ugraditi dodatnu grafičku karticu u AGP utor. Inače, u AGP utor moguće je ugraditi AIMM modul koji dodaje 4MB memorije koju onda koristi ugrađena grafika bez upotrebe sistemske memorije. Bolje rješenje je, naravno, ipak zasebna AGP kartica.

Najveći kamen spomutnje je količina upotrebljive memorije. Samo 512MB. Podržano je 6 redova (rows) memorije šta je dovoljno za 3 utora. Intel navodi da su samo prva dva utora rađena za PC133 specifikaciju. Ukoliko u treći utor utaknete memoriju, bila ona PC133 ili ne, kompletna memorija ponašat će se kao PC100. Na nekim testovima ploče su pokazale nestabilnost kada su sva tri utora popunjena. Neki proizvođači stavljaju na ploče i 4 utora, ali onda se još pažljivije mora sastavljati sistem jer tada neki utori moraju biti popunjeni s jednostranim memorijskim modulima.

Zadnji nedostatak čipseta je u ograničenosti na samo 64MB koja može iskoristiti grafička kartica (ugrađena ili ona na AGP utoru). Stari BX mogao je koristiti 128 ili čak 256 MB što i nije moglo biti iskorišteno zbog dvostruke brzine. Ali zašto ograničavati AGP 4X na samo 64MB memorije ostaje na Intelovim inženjerima.

I da dodamo, 815 ne podržava SMP tj. višeprocesorki sustav.

Ali da kažemo i nešto pozitivnog o čipsetu. Novost su ugrađeni AMR (Audio Modem Riser) i CNR (Communication Netvork Riser) utori. Obadva služe za softverske kartice koje su jeftine i jednostavne za ugradnju, ali koriste kapacitete procesora. Jednostavna ugradnja i brzo stavljanje u pogon, uz smanjene performanse.
