Površinski elektrostatski efekti - vraški brze ubojice

- Uvod -

Elektrostatsko nabijanje i izbijanje su jedni od najčešćih površinskih efekata koji uništavaju i degradiraju naše elektroničke uređaje, uključujući i naše drage kompjuterske komponente. Nakon proučavanja okoline za kvalitetne promjene, područje elektrostatskog izbijanja ostaje uvijek kao glavni ključ. Statički elektricitet je bio industrijski problem stoljećima pa su tako već 1400. god europske i karipske utvrde koristile statičke kontrolne procedure i pomagala da zaštite elektrostatsko izbijanje, a time i skladišta za barut od eksplozije. U papirnicama po Americi (1890 godine) korištene su tehnike uzemljenja, ionizacije i tehnike parnih bubnjeva da se disipira statički elektricitet iz papirne mreže.

U novije doba devedesete godine prošlog stoljeća se mogu pamtiti kao desetljeće kvalitetnih promjena u industrijskoj elektronici. Povećana konkurencija i razni ISO certifikati su poboljšali kvalitetu čak i u onim kompanijama koje na to nisu nisu ni ciljale. Doba mikroelektronike donijelo je nove probleme asocirane sa statičkim elektricitetom i elektrostatskim izbijanjem. Elektronički uređaji postajali su brži i manji, a njihova osjetljivost na ESD (electrostatic discharge) se povećavala. Danas ESD pogađa produktivnost i pouzdanost produkata u svim aspektima elektroničkog okruženja ali i u drugim industrijama. Usprkos velikom naporu tijekom prošlog desetljeća ESD još uvijek utječe na rezultate, troškove, kvalitetu, pouzdanost i profitabilnost. Industrijski stručnjaci predviđaju gubitke zbog ESD u opsegu između 8-33%, dok u novčanom smislu to znači milijune dolara godišnje. Troškovi oštećenih uređaja variraju od nekoliko kuna za diodu do stotine dolara za integrirani hibrid. Kada se s time zbroje troškovi popravka, vraćanja i rada, misao o rješenju tog problema se uvelike isplati.

Statički elektricitet: nabijanje

Statički elektricitet je definiran kao električni naboj uzrokovan neravnotežom elektrona na površini materijala. Neravnoteža elektrona proizvodi električno polje koje može biti mjereno i može utjecati na druge objekte u okolini. Elektrostatsko izbijanje je definirano kao prijenos naboja između tijela različitog električnog potencijala. Elektrostatsko izbijanje može promijeniti električne karakteristike poluvodičkog uređaja, degradirati ga ili uništiti ili može pokvariti normalnu operaciju elektronskog sistema uzrokujući kvar ili neuspjeh opreme. Jedan od problema uzrokovan statičkim elektricitetom su i čiste sobe. Nabijene površine mogu privući i držati kontaminante, stvarajući njihovo micanje iz okoline vrlo kompliciranim. Privučeni kontaminanti na površinu silicijskom sloja ili električnog kruga mogu izazvati nasumične slojne efekte i smanjiti vrijeme trajanja uređaja.
