24-bitni pucanj u prazno

Iako ne volim pisati pretjerano pobunjeničko-pravedničke tekstove (imam osjećaj da koliko god ja lajao, karavane će i dalje spokojno prolaziti), potaknut nedavnom vezanom diskusijom u gluho doba noći s Berenom, mojim kolegom po oružju, zaključio sam da to više ne mogu izbjegavati.

Današnja tema je digitalni audio, ili preciznije rečeno, neki trendovi "upitne kvalitete" koji su u zadnje vrijeme na tom području počeli uzimati maha. Čak i ukoliko niste duboki audiofanatik, možda ne trebate odmah nišaniti tipku Back jer vas ne kanim daviti izrazima koji zvuče kao da su iz Star Treka, već će sve ostati na rječniku s kojom se svaki računalni entuzijast snalazi prije ili kasnije.

Dar s nebesa

Ne trebate biti nimalo perceptivni da bi opazili koji izraz je sve češći u svijetu računalnog zvuka - radi se o famoznoj rezoluciji od 24 bita. Svi renomiraniji proizvođači računalne zvučne tehnike već su dosegli taj standard, a njihovi stavovi prema tome počinju od "da, sad tu naprednu tehnologiju imamo i mi", do hvaljenja koje nas tjera da pomišljamo da se radi, ako ništa više, barem o Božjem daru s nebesa. Takvi agresivni izljevi marketinških mizantropa stvorili su rašireno mišljenje da je 24-bitni zvuk beskrajno bolji od 20-bitnog, dok je 16 bita na razini računalnog kamenog doba.

Između super-modernog Creativeog Audigyja 4 i prastarog SB PCI 16 ima mnogo razlika, ali razliku u rezoluciji praktički je nemoguće čuti, osobito u kućnim uvjetima slušanja

Došlo je vrijeme da konačno razbijemo taj mit. No iole smislenije obrazloženje će tražiti da prvo lagano prokopamo po teoriji audio-uzorkovanja (samplanja) i što jednostavnije razjasnimo na koji se način različite rezolucije zapravo manifestiraju.

Saga o decibelima

Inženjeri bi rekli da povišavanje broja bitova povećava dinamiku, a to, vrlo pojednostavljeno rečeno, znači da se povišava najviša glasnoća koja se može tom karticom snimiti ili reproducirati. Svaki bit uzorkovanja nju će povisiti za 6 dB (6.0206 dB ako ćemo baš biti sitničavi, a objašnjenje zašto baš toliko bila bi, barem u ovom tekstu, preduboka digresija).

Prema tome, nije teško izračunati maksimalnu "snimljivu" glasnoću za karticu s konverzijom od N bitova. Za pretpotopne 8-bitne kartice ona iznosi 48 dB, za 16-bitne 96 dB, 20-bitne 120 dB, i napokon 144 dB za aktualnih 24 bita. Mnogi će na zato na ovom mjestu logično pomisliti da je prelazak s 8-bitnih kartica na 16-bitne jednak napredak kao i s njih na famozna 24 bita.

Razlika u dinamici između konverzija od 8 i 16 bita je poprilična, ali sve iznad toga je zapravo samo dodavanje nepotrebnih finesa

Teoretski se to ne može osporiti, no koliki je to uopće napredak u praksi? Maksimalna glasnoća od 96 dB koja se bez izobličenja može snimiti s 16 bita odgovara galami pneumatske bušilice, 20-bitno možete snimiti polijetanje mlaznog aviona, a 24 bita će dostajati i za eksploziju opakije JDAM bombe. I sad razmislite - da li vam tako nešto treba?

Da bi iskoristili puni dinamički raspon koji vam 16-bitni zvuk pruža, glasnoću bi morali podesiti tako da vam ona u vrhu doseže akustičku glasnoću pneumatske bušilice! I to na opremi koja ne izobličava, ne šumi, i zatvorena je u najbolju zamislivu gluhu komoru. A kod 20-bitnog i 24-bitnog zvuka stvari stoje još ekstremnije. Jesu li ovo uvjeti u kojima vi obično rabite svoj zvučni sustav?

Većina ljudi rijetko će podesiti glasnoću glazbe na više od 70 dB, što znači da bi generalno i 12-bitna konverzija morala biti više nego dovoljna. U suprotnom se jednostavno odričete mogućnosti koje vam dodatni bitovi daju, jer finese koje oni donose može jedino eventualno čuti vaš pas (ako i on). Ne treba niti spomenuti da rijetko koji zvučni sustav uopće može proizvesti glasnoću od 96 dB koliko je potrebno da se u nemogućim idealnim uvjetima opazi razlika između 16-bitne i boljih konverzija, te da će vam kod viših rezolucija jedina razlika biti to što ćete više bitova bacati u vjetar. Jedini slučaj u kojemu ćete zaista upogoniti 24 bita (iako to nećete opaziti) je, primjerice, slušanje audio DVD-a, koji je i dalje vrlo, vrlo slabo korišten format.
