nVidia GeForce 7800GTX - brza i žestoka

Što je novo kod nVidijine serije 7? Krenimo ispočetka. G70 odnosno GeForce 7800GTX je prvi nVidijin high-end čip proizveden 110-nanometarskim proizvodnim procesom. Dosada je nVidia finijim proizvodnim procesor izrađivala samo sporije čipove kao što su GeForce 6600 i 6200 dok je za jače čipove i dalje bio rabljen stariji, ali provjereni 130-nanometarski proces. Službeni takt čipa je 430 MHz, a arhitekturalno je razdijeljen na 24 pixel shaderska cjevovoda te 8 vertex shaderskih jedinica. Memoriju na ovoj kartici čine GDDR3 čipovi ukupnog kapaciteta 256 MB koji rade na relativno sporom taktu od 1200 MHz. Kao što znamo, već je GeForce 6800 Ultra imala memoriju na taktu od 1150 MHz pa je, s obzirom na mogućnosti novog čipa, rast od 50 MHz prilično neujednačen što su pokazali i testovi. Valja napomenuti da za ovo ne treba kriviti nVidijiu već proizvođače memorije koji na tržište još uvijek nisu plasirali dovoljno brze, a istovremeno i jeftine memorijske čipove. Kao što se moglo i pretpostaviti, svi memorijski čipovi su smješteni na prednjem dijelu kartice ostavljajući mjesta za ugradnju dodatne memorije na njenoj poleđini. Drugim riječima - 7800 Ultra će imati 512 MB memorije.

nVidijina zvijer u punom sjaju

Arhitekura novog čipa nije se mnogo promijenila u odnosu na stari GF 6800. Razlog tome je očit - GeForce 6 već podržava sve aktualne tehnologije kao što je shaderski model 3.0 ili HDR osvjetljenje. Osim dodatnih cjevovoda i shaderskih jedinica, GeForce 7 se može pohvaliti optimizacijama starije arhitekture. Vertex shaderi su optimizirani, a time i ubrzani tako da jedna vertex shaderska operacija na novoj kartici traje 78, a na staroj (GF 6800 Ultra) 108 taktova. Poboljšane su mogućnosti pixel shadera pri izvođenju operacija s pomičnim zarezom (floating point) tako da čip sada mnogo bolje "žvače" MADD (Multiply and Accumulate) instrukcije. Prema nVidijinim analizama, MADD instrukcije su najčešće rabljene instrukcije pri programiranju pixel shadera pa otuda i razlog zašto su ih ubrzali. Unaprijeđene su i jedinice za teksture (ROP) što bi u teoriji trebalo rezultirati bržim anti-aliasingom, aplha-blendingom te operacijama s z-kompresijom. ROP jedinica i dalje ima samo 16, a ne 24 kao što nalaže arhitektura GeForcea 6800 Ultra (dotični čip je imao jedan ROP po cjevovodu). Pretpostavljamo da je nVidija zaključila da novom čipu ne treba toliko ROP jedinica poučena iskustvom GeForcea 6600 (dotični ima 4 ROP-a na 8 cjevovoda).

7800GTX donosi i smanjenu potrošnju

S novim proizvodnim procesom nVidija je uspjela smanjiti potrošnju svojih čipova pa tako novi GeForce troši manje energije nego stari high-end čip. Konkretno, to je najbolje vidljivo prema preporukama za napajanje. nVidia više ne preporučuje 380-wattno već 350-wattno napajanje. Zajedno s potrošnjom, smanjeno je i zagrijavanje čipa pa na novoj kartici nismo naišli na masivni hladnjak koji zauzima dva slota kao što je slučaj kod 6800 Ultra ili Radeona X850XT. Naravno, kao i kartice prošle generacije, 7800GTX podržava tehnologiju SLI.

Temperatura u "prozorima"

Naravno, kao i sve ostale high-end kartice, 7800GTX i dalje disipira mnogo topline pa je tijekom testiranja kartica bila prilično vruća. Moramo priznati da ugrađeni ventilator nije pretjerano bučan čak niti pri punoj brzini odnosno kad čip radi na punom taktu. Situacija je još bolje u Windowsima gdje je čipu smanjen takt (na 275 MHz) i napon, a ventilatoru skresana brzina. Za ilustraciju, prilikom eksperimentiranja s MSI-evom SLI pločom, dvije GF 7800GTX, Athlonom 64 4800+ X2 hlađenim Zalmanom 7000Cu te Fortronovim napajanjem od 500W, najbučniji ventilator u cijeloj konfiguraciji je bio onaj na čipsetu.
