Athlon 500 overclocking

- Uvod -

Do prije šest mjeseci Intel je bio jedino rješenje za one koji žele istinski brzo PC računalo. No onda se pojavio AMD-ov Athlon i promijenio situaciju. Procesor se pokazao kao prava jurilica koja je nemilosrdno pokosila Katmai Pentiume. Coppermine se pokazao nešto bržim procesorom od Athlona, ali ne toliko radi bržeg cache-a koliko radi superiornijih matičnih ploča (440BX čipset je unatoč podmakloj dobi i dalje #1 čipset).

Zbog svoje brzine, niže cijene te potencijala za overclocking Athlon je bio idealni izbor za naš novi projekt. Nabavili smo Athlon na 500MHz, Asus K7M ploču, STEP Yukon sendvič hladnjak i bacili se na posao. Izabrali smo Athlon 500 jer je najeftiniji te zato što je velik broj petstotki imalo jezgru od brže braće (uglavnom od 650MHz varijante). Nakon skidanja oklopa pokazalo se da je naš Athlon 500 ustvari Athlon 650 sa cache memorijom od 3.3ns. Super! Samo skidanje oklopa nije prekomplicirano - samo treba biti pažljiv i ne žuriti se. Čovjek se jedino malo namuči sa prednjim dijelom oklopa kojeg je nemoguće skinuti, a da se pri tome ne unište klipse koje ga drže na procesoru.

Radi boljeg hlađenja procesora obrusili smo ga do bakra. Na taj način se postiže bolji prijelaz topline s procesora na heatsink. Samo stavljanje heatsink-a nije bilo baš najjednostavnije jer smo upotrijebili jednu čudnu pastu koju smo nabavili u SAD-u koja se mora stavljati pri izuzetno visokoj temperaturi da bi se onda bolje primila. Tako da smo morali malo "kuhati" i procesor i heatsink, ali sve je prošlo bez problema. Izabrali smo tu pastu jer nismo imali bakrenih umetaka (spacer-a) koji bi išli između cache-a i heatsink-a, a jedna od osobina ove paste je da se stvrdne ubrzo nakon stavljanja te onda može poslužiti i kao spona dviju stvari. Na isti način smo zaljepili i manji hladnjak na leđa procesora.
