- Uvod i čipset -

ATI-jevi čipseti uvijek su imali grandiozne najave no često bi realna situacija s brojem matičnih ploča koje su nastale na bazi ovih čipseta bila vrlo loša. Obično bi završili u nekim pločama niske klase namijenjenim OEM računalima ili korisnicima s vrlo malim budžetom i još manjim zahtjevima. Kad smo u vrijeme predstavljanja tehnologije Crossfire pričali s ATI-jem, bilo na je rečeno da su baš Crossfire ploče ono pravo odnosno ploče namijenjene zahtjevnim korisnicima i entuzijastima, ploče koje će usvojiti svi veći proizvođači matičnih ploča. Premda se ove ATI-jeve najave nisu baš ostvarile u potpunosti odnosno ploča baziranih na čipsetima ove tvrtke i dalje ima vrlo malo (koliko znamo, u Hrvatskoj je moguće nabaviti samo Asusovu, Abitovu i DFI-jevu ploču), činjenica je da nove ploče ipak nisu samo low-end proizvodi dizajnirani da budu što jeftiniji za krajnjeg korisnika.

Paralelno s ovim preobratom u naš je lab, doduše prilično kasno, stigla matična ploča bazirana na ATI-jevom čipsetu Radeon Xpress 200P, istom onom od je nastao Crossfire. Zapravo, možda je bolje ne govoriti o čipsetu već samo o čipu budući da je Xpress 200P samo northbridge odnosno čip koji se brine za komunikaciju procesora, memorije, grafičke kartice s ostatkom sistema (ostatak sistema se povezuje na southbridge). Dakle ATI za razliku od nVidie i dalje rabi klasično rješenje s dva odvojene čipa što ima svoje prednosti i mane.

Zasigurno najveća prednost ovakvog rješenja je fleksibilnost zato što je moguće rabiti različite kombinacije čipova za northbridge i southbridge. Ovo pogotovo dolazi do izražaja kad je riječ o ATI-jevom Xpress 200P čipu koji se na southbridge povezuje preko PCI-E sabirnice. Konkretno, ATI-jev čip podržava ukupno 22 PCI-E stazice odnosno lanea, pa 16 stazica otpada na grafičku karticu (ili 2x po 8 na dvije grafičke kartice u Crossfire verziji čipa), četiri stazice na PCI-E x1 utore, a zadnje dvije stazice služe za vezu sa southbridgeom. Što se tiče ostalih karakteristika ovog čipa, prilično su standardne - podržani su Athlon 64 Socket 939 procesori te DDR memorija u jednokanalnom i dvokanalnom modu.

ATI-jev southbridge koji nosi oznaku SB450 ima pak malo kontraverzniju priču. Jedan od glavnih razloga zašto se ATI odlučio na PCI-E komunikaciju između northbridgea i southbridgea je zbog toga što je na ovaj način bilo moguće upariti Xpress 200P northbridge rješenjima drugih proizvođala, npr. s ULi-jevim čipom M1575. Uzrok toga je nemogućnost ATI-ja da razvije kvalitetan komunikacijski čip koji bi mogao parirati ostalim rješenjima na tržištu. Konkretno, ATI nije bio u stanju razviti vlastiti SATA kontroler pa su implementaciju SATA kanala u svom čipu riješili integracijom dva odvojena kontrolera tvrtke Silicon Image (Sil3132). Ovi kontroleri ne podržavaju standard SATA2 no to nije toliki problem. Veći problem je što dva čipa rade odvojeno tako da je moguće koristiti samo parove susjednih kanala (1+2 ili 3+4). Iz istog razloga ATI-jev čip ne podržava RAID polje 0+1 već samo 0 i 1 s prijespomenutim ograničenjima oko kanala. Podržano je samo osam USB2.0 kanala, dakle 2 manje nego kod nForcea4, a nativnog gigabitnog mrežnog kontrolera nema. Ono u čemu je ATI-jev čip u prednosti nad nVidijinim rješenjem jest integrirani zvuk. Dok nForce4 za AMD podržava isključivo olinjalu AC'97 specifikaciju, ATI-jev se southbridge može pohvaliti podrškom za Intelov HD Audio.
