SMPS handbook ili što su to napajanja?

Napajanje, uređaj koji snabdjeva neki drugi uređaj, sklop ili sustav električnom ili nekom drugom energijom (najčešće električnom), u PC svijetu su veliki dio svoga postojanja bili zanemarivani ili im se nije pridavala prevelika pažnja. U počecima računalnog hobizma, linearni regulatori su bili glavni pokretač svakog računala i na njih se nije obraćala pretjeranja pažnja, obzirom da ni tadašnja računala nisu trošila previše el. energije; danas, skoro 25 godina od pojave PC-a, proizvodnja napajanja, jos i danas prilično primitivnih uređaja, postala je vrlo unosan posao.

Što, zapravo, čini klasično PC napajanje? Prvenstveno, generalno, PC napajanja možemo podijeliti na dvije velike grupe, AT te ATX. Kao i većina stvari u PC svijetu, i njihova napajanja počivaju na arhaičnim tehnologijama, pa su tako i najnovija ATX napajanja zapravo nadogradnja starih AT napajanja, no o tome nešto kasnije. Sva današnja PC napajanja su SMPS (switching mode power supply) napajanja te se mogu podijeliti na tri glavna dijela: ulaz, izlaz i logiku. No što je zapravo razlog korištenja SMPS tehnologije? Nepobitna činjenica jest da su ljudi oduvijek težili minijaturizaciji, što zbog pragmatičnih, tako i zbog ekonomskih pobuda. Tako je i s napajanjima; kroz godine razvoja napajanja su postajala sve manja i učinkovitija. SMPS ne samo da nudi visoku učinkovitost, nego i iznimnu fleksibilnost pri dizajniranju. Učestali napredci u poluvodičkoj, magnetskoj i pasivnoj tehnologiji učinili su SMPS napajanja glavnim izborom napajanja. I što zapravo čini SMPS boljim izborom za vas PC od dedinog transformatora iz '43? Za početak, linearna i switching regulacija koristi fundamentalno razlicite principe dobivanja stabiliziranih ulaza od nestabiliziranih. Linearna napajanja mogu se koristiti isključivo u step-down režimu rada, odnosno da od većeg ulaza dobijemo manji i to tako da se bipolarni tranzistor ili MOSFET drži u linearnom modu rada. U ovakvom tipu rada postiže se svega 35% do 64% učinkovitosti; ako s 12V trebamo dobiti 5V@100mA, disipacija iznosi 700mW za 500mW trošilo uz učinkovitost od svega 42 posto. Drugim riječima, za svako trošilo iznad 10W, ironično, samo hladilo koštalo bi više od čitavog regulacijskog sklopa, bez da uključujemo estetsko praktični dio.

SMPS, s druge strane, radi na takav način da izrazito brzo mijenja stanje tranzistora iz zasićenja u zapiranje. U načelu, poluvodički switcher iz istosmjernog napona daje izmjenični s visokom frekvencijom, koji onda može biti "podignut" ili "spušten" (step-up odnosno step-down) te nakon toga ponovno filtriran u istosmjerni izlaz. Ovakvim nacinom rada, postiže se učinkovitost od 65 do 95 posto. Postoje i podtipovi SMPS rada i dijele se na pulse–width modulated (PWM), forward–mode i boost–mode. Ono čime ćemo se mi malo pozabaviti je PWM način rada jer se baš on koristi kod naših napajanja u računalima.
