- Ipak ventilator -
Za početak spomenimo neke karakteristike s kojima se ova ploča razlikuje od ostalih proizvoda na tržištu. Osim gigabitnog mrežnog sučelja spojenog na kontroler u čipsetu, na ploči se nalazi odvojeni gigabitni mrežni kontroler Marvell 88E8053 koji je spojen preko PCI-E sabirnice na southbrige. Ista je stvar s podrškom za SATA diskove i optičke pogone s obzirom da je uz integrirani kontroler u čipsetu MSI ovu ploču opremio i sa zasebnim SATA2 kontrolerom Silicon Image Sil3132 koji nudi dva SATA konektora s podrškom za RAID 0 i 1. Tu je dakako i kontroler koji se brine za Firewire podršku, VIA VT6306, koji nudi brzine do 400Mb/s na headera izvedene na PCB i standardnom konektoru na I/O pločici. Zadnji kontroler vrijedan spomena je onaj koji se brine za zvuk. U slučaju K8N Diamond Plus to je Creative Labsov AudigySE čip sa svojih sedam analognih konektora (maksimalno 7.1) te dva digitalna izlaza (koaksijalni i optički).

Crni PCB, standardan za MSI-jeve ploče više klase

Čipset je hlađen aktivno, unatoč našim očekivanjima

Ploča je izvedena na crnom PCB-u, kao što je već duže vrijeme standardno za MSI-jeve ploče visoke klase. Dva su dijela čipseta hlađena s bakrenim hladnjacima koji su povezani toplovodnom cijevi. Ovaj se sistem doduše ne proteže i na sklop koji služi za regulaciju napajanja procesora, unatoč tome što je tako nešto za očekivati na matičnoj ploči namijenjenoj entuzijastima. Hladnjak koji se nalazi na northbridgeu je prilično velik, a na njegovom boku je smješten i ventilator što je dobro po pitanju overclockiranja, ali nije po pitanju buke i trajnosti ploče (ventilator je mehanički dio koji se pomiče i kao takav je podložan habanju). Uz to, premda je inače prostor oko socketa prilično "čist", vjerujemo da će mnogim većim hladnjacima smetati upravo veliki hladnjak na gornjem dijelu čipseta.

8-pinski 12-voltni konektor "ukraden" sa serverskih ploča

Konektori za napajanje ploče razmješteni su kako-tako. Premda je glavni 24-pinki ATX konektor smješten na rub ploče, konektor za dodatno 12-voltno napajanje je smješten blizu nortbridgea što će vas prisilit na vratolomije s kabelima. Spomenimo i to da se radi o novom 8-pinskom konektoru koji je na stolne ploče došao iz profesionalnog segmenta. Unatoč tome što je 8-pinski, u njega ćete bez problema moći upiknuti klasični 4-pinski konektor pa vas ova ploča neće prisiliti na kupovinu novog napajanja.

Utori za memoriju, komada četiri, su smješteni na klasični način – na desnom rubu ploče. PCI-E konektor namijenjen grafičkoj kartici, točnije prvi PCI-E konektor za grafičku karticu, nije smješten niti osobito blizu, niti osobito daleko od memorijskih utora. Drugim riječima, nećete morati vaditi grafičku karticu da bi prčkali po memorijskim utorima, ali se bogme nećete moći niti razmahati. Kad smo već kod memorije, valja spomenuti čudan set kratkospojnika koji se nalaze direktno ispod memorijskih utora, a zaštićeni su crvenom trakom (bacite pogled na jednu od gornjih fotki). Naime, maksimalni napon koji ploča na tvorničkim postavkama može isporučiti memoriji je 3,2 volta. Ako želite više, morat ćete skinuti crvenu traku sa spomenutih kratkspojnika te uključiti overvolt memorije, što usput rečeno okončava i vaše jamstvo. Nakon modifikacije kratkospojnika, ploča je memoriji u stanju isporučiti 4 volta.
