Intel Core2 Extreme X6800 i E6700 – šaka u oko

- Uvod -
Nakon jako dugo vremena i velikih najava, Intel je predstavio procesore bazirane na novoj i radikalnoj arhitekturi za koju je odgovoran tim inženjera iz Intelovoj razvojnog centra smještenog u izraelskom grafu Haifa. Nova serija procesora dobila je službeno ime Core 2 s čime je poznati brand Pentium poslan u ropotarnicu povijesti. Zajedno s imenom, Intel se oprostio i s arhitekturom NetBurst orijentiravši se na dizajn koji karakterizira kraći pipeline, niži takt, velik dinamički L2 cache dijeljen između jezgri, širok izvršni engine te niska potrošnja.

Ruku na srce, arhitektura NetBurst, premda je imala svojih sjajnih trenutaka kao što je jezgra Northwood, generalno nije previše impresionirala svojim mogućnostima. Nakon što je AMD predstavio arhitekturu, a time i prve Athone 64 i Opterone, pravila igre su postala još stroža, no Intel joj se nije prilagodio kako treba odigravši kartu pod imenom Prescott. Premda su od Prescotta očekivana čuda (npr. radni takt od 5 do 10 GHz), najnovija iteracija arhitekture NetBurst samo je donijela dodatne probleme, posebice po pitanju zagrijavanja.

U proljeće 2003. godine, netom prije predstavljanja prvih Pentiuma 4 Northwood s 800-megahercnom sabirnicom, Intel je predstavio procesore razvijane pod imenom Banias. Pentiumi M bili su namijenjeni uporabi na prijenosnicima kao dio platforme Centrino. Ono što je zanimljivo u cijeloj priči je da su dizajnirani u istom centru kao i Conroe – centru u Izraelskoj Haifi. Pentiumi M nisu bili samo nisko-naponska verzija Pentiuma 4 već novi dizajn baziran na arhitekturi Pentiuma III kojoj su dodane nove mogućnosti. Unatoč niskom taktu, performanse Pentiuma M bile su jednake, a često i bolje od stolnih Pentiuma 4 osjetno višeg takta. Uz to, ovi procesori su se mogli pohvaliti i osjetno nižom potrošnjom u odnosu na stolne procesore, bilo Intela ili AMD-a.

Na žalost mnogih naprednijih korisnika, Pentiumi M nikada nisu zaživjeli kao stolni procesori što zbog Intelovog skaliranja proizvodnih linija, što zbog toga što si firma nije htjela zabiti nož u leđa s potvrdom da procesori s niskim taktom mogu imati jednake ili bolje performanse od više-gigahercnih Pentiuma 4. Naime, arhitektura NetBurst koja je omogućavala vrlo visok takt velikim je dijelom plod marketinških zahtjeva koje je uvjetovala utrka izmeđa AMD-a i Intela kod lansiranja prvog stolnog procesora s taktom od jednog gigaherca. Kako je zbog ove utrke većina običnih korisnika zaključila kako je procesor s višim taktom i brži procesor, Intel se potrudio korisnicima ponuditi ono što su željeli vidjeti – procesore sa što većim radnim taktom.

Nakon što je Prescott kao posljednja revizija NetBurst arhitekture iznevjerio očekivanja zbog problema s postizanjem odgovarajućih taktova kao i velikih problema sa zagrijavanjem, postalo je jasno da Intelu treba osjetno drugačija arhitektura kako bi vratio staru slavu. Odgovor na ovo pitanje ponovo je došao iz izraelskog razvojnog tima koji je čini se imao slobodne ruke pri dizajnu nove generacije arhitekture. Inovacija i inženjerske vještine su ponovo došle u prvi plan, nauštrb zahtjeva marketinškog odjela. Rezultat je arhitektura izgrađena na uspješnim korijenima originalne arhitekture P6, a time i Pentiuma III te Pentiuma M.
