Intel Core2 Extreme X6800 i E6700 – šaka u oko

- Arhitektura i mogućnosti -
Službeno ime nove arhitekture je Intel Core Microarchitecture. Riječ je o vrlo modernom derivatu originalne P6 arhitekture predstavljene 1995. godine s Pentiumom Pro. Osnovna baza arhitketure je 14-stupanjski pipeline, više od upola kraći od Prescottovog 31-stupanjskog pipelinea. Mogućnost paralelne obrade instrukcija je također osjetno poboljšana pa je svaka jezgra sposobna istovremeno obrađivati četiri mikro-op instrukcije (stariji procesori obrađuju samo tri). U odnosu na arhitekturu Pentiuma M poboljšana je predikcija granjanja, povećan je instrukcijski buffer te je dodana mogućnost makrofuzije.

Kod procesora starije generacije svaka bi se instrukcija individualno dekodirala i izvršavala. Novi Intelovi procesori pak imaju mogućnost sparivanja kompatibilnih instrukcija u jednu internu instrukciju (mikro-op) što povećava broj instrukcija koje procesor može obraditi u jedinici vremena. Kod Conroea je također poboljšana mikro-op fuzija, feature predstavljen s Pentiumom M. Kod modernih procesora klasične se x86 instrukcije (makro-opovi) pretvaraju u manje i jednostavnije instrukcije (mikro-opove) koje logičke jedinice u procesoru lakše obrađuju. Mikro-op fuzija omogućava stapanje kompatibilnih mikro-opova koji su nastali od istog makro-opa što pak smanjuje broj mikro-opova koje procesor treba obraditi.

S obzirom da je Intel Core Microarchitecture prva Intelova procesorska arhitektura od početka dizajnirana za dvojezgreni odnosno višejezgreni rad, inženjeri iz Haife su implementirali novi način pristupanja cacheu. Organizacija L1 cachea je ostala vrlo slična kao na Pentiumu M – po 32 kB za podatkovni i instrukcijski cache (8-way associative, s tim da je dodana mogućnosti direktne komunikacije između L1 cachea na svim jezgrama. L2 cache je pak dinamički dijeljen između jezgri, a u odnosu na Pentium M povišena je asocijativnost sa 8-way na 16-way. Zavisno o modelu, dvije jezgre dijele dva ili četiri megabajta cachea koji se dinamički alocira prema potrebama svake jezgre.

S obzirom na povećanu efikasnost procesora te činjenicu da se memorijski kontroler i dalje nalazi u čipsetu, a ne na samom procesoru, implementirane su tehnologije pod zajedničkim imenom Intel Smart Memory Access. Prva i najvažnije je Memory Disambiguation. Moderni x86 procesori imaju mogućnost out-of order izvršavanja instrukcija odnosno ne izvršavaju instrukcije u istom poretku kakav im je zadao softver već ih preuređuju redoslijed instrukcija radi postizanja veće efikasnosti. Cilj out-of-order izvršavanja instrukcija je zadržavanje popunjenog pipelinea kako bi logika u procesoru cijelo vrijeme bila s nečim uposlena.

Izvršavanje 128-bitnih SSE instrukcija u jednom taktu

Stariji procesori također rade na ovom principu, no on ima i neka svoja ograničenja kao što je nemogućnost izvršavanja load instrukcija (instrukcija koje čitaju podatke) prije store instrukcija (one koje zapisuju podatke), s obzirom da procesor ne zna da li će load instrukcija koja je "pogurana" ispred store instrukcije pročitati prave podatke (pošto je store instrukcija možda trebala te iste podatke izmjeniti). Memory disambiguation riješava ovaj problem pomoću algoritama koji određuju da li se load instrukcija zaista sigurno može izvršiti prije store instrukcije unatoč tome što bi se bez preuređivanja redoslijeda izvršavanja store instrukcija trebala izvršiti prije load instrukcije. U slučaju da se unatoč algoritmima dogodi greška, logika će ponovo izvršiti load instrukciju uz pomoć točnih podataka (logično je pretpostaviti da za spremanje originalnih podataka postoji i specijalni buffer).

Još jedan feature kojim su unaprijeđene performanse, pogotovo u multimedijalnim aplikacijama je Intel Advanced Media Boost. Riječ je o 16 novih SSE instrukcija koje su dodane postojećem setu (neki to nazivaju i SSE4, no to nije službeni naziv), kao i mogućnosti izvršavanja 128-bitnih instrukcija u samo jednom taktu (do sada je na ovakve instrukcije bilo potrebno potrošiti dva takta).

Dakako, tu je podrška za 64-bitne instrukcije odnosno EMT64, XD bit, ali i Intel VT odnosno hardversku virtualizaciju razvijanu pod kodnim imenom Vanderpool.
