Intel Core2 Extreme X6800 i E6700 – šaka u oko

Novi se procesori proizvode 65-nanometarskim procesom uz pomoć tehnologije razvlačenja silicija (Strained Si) druge generacije. Proizvodnja Conroea će migrirati na 45-nanometarski proces čim za to Intel stvori operativne uvjete.

Trenutni proizvodni proces rezultira s dvojezgrenim procesorima sa 167 odnosno 291 milijuna tranzistora zavisno da li je riječ o verziji s dva ili četiri megabajta cachea (primjetite koliko je cache zapravo "skup" za implementaciju). Za usporedbu, dvojezgreni Athloni 64 s megabajtom cachea sadrže oko 227,4 milijuna tranzistora. Što se fizičke veličine, površina modela s manje cachea iznosi 111 mm2, a modela s četiri megabajta cachea 143 mm2. Za usporedbu, posljednja generacija Athlona 64 izrađenih 90-nanometarskim procesom ima površinu od 183 odnosno 230 mm2, zavisno o tome da li je riječ o procesoru s manjim ili većim cacheom.

Testna matična ploča bazirana na i975X čipsetu

Conroe je poput starijih Intelovih procesora namijenjen ugradnji u LGA775 procesorsko sučelje, no zahtijeva adekvatan čipset. Podržani Intelovi čipseti pripadaju seriji 975, 965, 964 i 946. Od svih navedenih čipset jedino je i975X nešto stariji što u praksi nameće određena ograničenja. Konkretno, samo određene novije ploče bazirane na i975X čipsetu zaista podržavaju Conroe budući da je Intel naknadno promjenio specifikacije sklopa za napajanje procesora. Što se tiče čipseta od nezavisnih proizvođača, trenutno samo NVIDIA nudi riješenja kompatibilna s Conroe procesorima, a to su čipseti nForce 590 SLI for Intel i nForce 570 SLI for Intel. Premda je inicijalno postojao plan i da ATI predstavi riješenja kompatibilna s Core 2 procesorima, no ti su planovi pali u vodu nakon akvizicije ATI-ja od strane intelovog arh-rivala AMD-a.

Postoje i određene matične ploče koje neslužbeno podržavaju Conroe poput ASRock ConRoe865PE, a zasnovane su na starijim čipsetima od kojih neki čak podržavaju i DDR memoriju. Zahvaljujemo čitatelju koji nam je na forumu ukazao na ovaj propust u članku.

Svi Core 2 procesori komuniciraju sa sistemom preko 1066-megahercne (266 MHz quad-pumped) sabirnice koja je preuzeta iz starijih platformi. Podrška za memoriju o individualnoj implementaciji na matičnoj ploči (broj utora, tip čipseta), no u osnovi procesori su dizajnirani za rad s DDR2 memorijom na taktu od 800 MHz. CPU množitelj je potpuno otključen samo na modelu X6800 odnosno Extreme Editionu kako bi se što više udovoljilo zagriženim overclockerima. Kod ostalih je pak modela množitelj moguće samo snižavati, ali ne i povećavati iznad tvorničke vrijednosti.

Jedan od glavnih featurea nove arhitekture je osjetno niže zagrijavanje u odnosu na Pentiume 4. Tako TDP odnosno tipična toplinska disipacija, prema službenim specifikacijama, za sve procesora osim najbržeg modela X6800 iznosi 65 W. Extreme Edition pak disipira 75 W. Valja naglasiti kako ovo nisu vršne vrijednosti. Drugim riječima, uz maksimalno opterećenje koje se može postići s nekim alatima poput Primea 95, zagrijavanje može biti i veće.

Što se tiče modela koji su trenutno ponuđeni na tržištu, ukupno ih je pet.

Cijene procesora su preuzete s cjenika online trgovine Newegg. Kao što vidimo, raspon cijena je očekivan s tim da je Extreme Edition zaista vrlo, vrlo skup, čak i u odnosu na istu klasu starijih procesora. Vjerujemo da će većini ljudi biti najzanimljivi ili najjeftiniji modeli s dva megabajta cachea, ili pak najjeftiniji modeli s četiri megabajta cachea za one koji su spremni dati više novca za performanse.

Kao što vjerojatno znate, AMD je nakon predstavljanja Core 2 procesora prilično jako srezao cijene. Situacija s AM2 procesorima je sljedeća (cijene također preuzete s Newegga, neki modeli nisu ponuđeni na cjeniku).

Unatoč sniženju, AMD-ovi procesori nisu osjetno jeftiniji od Intelovih Core 2 procesora, barem ako zanemarimo dva najskuplja procesora – Athlon 64 FX-62 i Core 2 X6800. Nešto je bolja situacija s donjim domom AMD-ovih dvojezgrenih procesora koji su pristupačniji od najjeftinijeg Corea 2. Svojevrsni as u rukavu za AMD su Socket 939 procesori s obzirom da mnogi korisnici posjeduju matične ploče s ovim socketom, a koje su pak kompatibilne sa svim Socket 939 procesorima (u prvom redu novijim dvojezgrenim procesorima).
