AMD Quad FX - monster platform madness

Kao što smo do sada više puta spomenuli, kad je riječ o prelasku na finiji proces proizvodnje procesora, Intel je uvijek bio korak ispred AMD-a. To je ujedno i glavni razlog zašto je Intel uspio napraviti četverojezgreni proces prije svog najvećeg takmaca. 90-nanometarski proizvodni proces otvorio je put izradi dvojezgrenih procesora, dok je pak 65-nanometarski proces stvorio mogućnost izrade četverojezgrenih procesora. Premda AMD trenutno ima razvijenu 65-nanometarsku tehnologiju, tvrtka ovu tehnologiju ne koristi dugo pa je nisu odlučili koristiti za izradu procesora najviše kategorije (Athlona 64 FX). Osim toga, AMD uskoro planira predstaviti procesore nove generacije bazirane na jezgri K8L. Ovi će procesori biti izrađeni 65-nanometarskim procesom što također znači da će imati četiri jezgre zapakirane u jedinstveno kućište.

Referentni Quad FX testni sistem

Situacija s proizvodnom tehnologijom natjerala je AMD na alternativni i donekle improvizirani pristup problemu četverojezgrenog računala. Umjesto jedno procesora s četiri jezgre AMD je krenuo putem kombiniranja dva dvojezgrena procesora na ploči s dva utora za procesor. Ovo zapravo i nije loša ideja ako uzmemo u obzir da AMD-ovi procesori imaju integrirani memorijski kontroler i da sa ostatkom sistema komuniciraju preko HyperTransport tunela, a ne preko klasične sabirnice. Ovakva prilično napredna arhitektura ima još jednu beneficiju - procesori u sustavu s više procesora su povezani jedni s drugim preko HyperTransport sabirnice, dok je samo jedan spojen na čipset. S obzirom da svaki procesor ima vlastiti memorijski kontroler, svaki od njih ima vlastite memorijske slotove kojima pristupa nezavisno o drugom procesoru. Rezultat je arhitektura visoke propusnosti koja se izuzetno dobro skalira u odnosu na broj jezgri ili procesora u računalu.

Za usporedbu, Intelovi procesori još uvijek nemaju integrirani memorijski kontroler (premda je najavljeno da će ga sljedeća generacija procesora imati) i pristupaju memoriji i ostatku sistema preko klasične sabirnice. Ovo nije problem kod dvojezgrenih procesora, no što više broj jezgri raste, to ovaj koncept ima sve manje smisla. Kod razmatranja skaliranja performansi na višejezgrenim sistemima također treba imati na umu još jednu kritičnu komponentu - operativni sistem. Windowsi XP nisu dizajnirani za rad s višejrezgrenim procesorima, a također ne prepoznaju logičke i fizičke jezgre u sistemu. Logičke jezgre su zapravo virtualne procesorske jezgre, a imali smo ih prilike vidjeti na Intelovim procesorima s tehnologijom HyperThreading. Fizičke jezgre su jezgre implementirane hardverski u siliciju. Windowsi XP ne znaju razlučiti između ova dva tipa jezgri što sa sobom povlači i da ne znaju lokacije fizičkih jezgri. S druge strane, novi Microsoftov operativni sustav Windows Vista ima napredne mogućnosti prepoznavanja hardvera što uključuje i prepoznavanje logičkih odnosno fizičkih jezgri te prepoznavanje lokacije jezgri zavisno o procesoru. Drugim riječima, tek će s Windowsima Vista prednosti AMD-ove arhitekture s integriranim memorijskim kontrolerom i HyperTransport tehnologijom u potpunosti moći ispuniti svoje potencijale.
