Overclockanje Core 2 Duo procesora je prilično jednostavan posao no on u velikoj mjeri ovisi o matičnoj ploči, tj. njezinoj sposobnosti da pogura procesor do krajnjih granica. Naš prvi pokušaj overclockanja je neslavno završio, Epoxova ploča zasnovana na P965 čipsetu koju smo koristili nije bila dorasla poslu. Nikakve overclockerske mogućnosti, unatoč činjenici da je čipset dokazan u toj disciplini, dodatno su pogoršane situacijom s memorijom. Iz nekog čudnog razloga proizvođač je odlučio izostaviti podatak u BIOS-u o trenutnoj frekvenciji memorije u odnosu na takt FSB-a pa je korisnik prisiljen ručno izračunavati takt s obzirom na FSB i množitelj memorije. Prilično nezgodno, pogotovo za one koji su novi u tim vodama. Na kraju smo odustali od Epoxa i okrenuli se gore spomenutoj ABIT-ovoj ploči za koju smo provjereno znali koliko može potegnuti.

2.8 GHz bez podizanja napona

Prilikom overclockanja potrebno je obratiti pažnju na par stvari. Najbolje je odmah pronaći krajnji takt FSB-a matične ploče, prilikom čega treba smanjiti množitelja procesora kako njegov radni takt on ne bi utjecao na stabilnost sustava. Pri tome valja voditi računa o memorijskim omjerima (1:1, 4:3, 5:4 itd.) i o NB strap vrijednosti u BIOSU-u, odnosno pokušati ostaviti radni takt memorije što bliže njezinoj nazivnoj brzini (533, 667 ili 800 MHz) kombinirajući te dvije vrijednosti. Iskusniji korisnici, osim maksimalnog takta ploče mogu pronaći i maksimalni takt memorije pa je to vrijednost koja dolazi u obzir. Kada smo to napravili onda vratimo množitelj procesora na najvišu vrijednost i postepeno dižemo takt FSB-a, pazeći na takt memorije i testiramo stabilnost cijelog sustava, pogotovo procesora. Za početak i lagano zagrijavanje, bez dizanja napona, povisili smo radni takt procesora s defaultnih 1,8 GHz na 2,8 GHz, za okruglih 1000MHz. Procesor je bez problema podnio taj napor pa smo se ponadali visokim brojkama, no ne zadugo.

Plafon na 3.3GHz

Kao što se i vidi iz priloženog, 3,3 GHz je zadnja stabilna frekvencija na koju smo uspjeli dotjerati naš procesor. Više jednostavno nije išlo, bez obzira na podizanje napona i ostale kombinacije. Iz informacija prikupljenih s Interneta, ovi procesori idu i do 3,6 GHz pa i više, no naš vrlo rani testni primjerak iz Intela nije bio raspoložen za veći napor. Zadnja frekvencija na kojoj smo uspjeli ući u Windowse je bila nešto malo manja od 3,6 GHz no tu nije bilo ni govora o stabilnosti potrebnoj da se izvrti ijedan test. Idealna kombinacija kod overclockanja je kada se postigne maksimalni stabilni takt procesora kombiniran s maksimalnom frekvencijom memorije na što nižim latencijama. U praksi, imamo memoriju koja npr. pri latencijama 4-4-4-15 ima maksimalan radni takt od 900MHz, te kombinirajući tu brzinu pokušavamo iz procesora izvući maksimum zadržavajući te postavke memorije. Tako na kraju dobijemo visok radni takt procesora koji u kombinaciji s memorijom na viskom taktu i niskim latencijama daje najbolje rezultate. No to je tek vrh ledenog brijega jer performanse ovise o još puno detalja u koje nećemo ulaziti u ovom članku.

Super PI na 3.3GHz

Iako je napon procesora na slici na 1,55 volta testni primjerak je sposoban normalno raditi na 3,3 GHz pri 1,45 volta, dok je veći napon na fotki bio posljedica pokušaja dostizanja većeg radnog takta. Maksimalna temperatura koju je procesor uspio postići na ovom taktu je 42 °C, no ona je dosegnuta u odlično ventiliranom kućištu (3x120 mm ventilatori) i pod Zalmanovim hladnjakom pa je tako procesor imao i više nego dobre uvjete za rad. Kao jednu od većih zamjerki na ostalim testovima navodi se upravo temperatura pri radu na maksimalnom taktu, no ona u našem slučaju nije predstavljala problem. Zanimljivo je da procesor bez problema dosegne 3,0 GHz na tvornički specifiranom naponu, no nakon toga za postizanje većih brzina odmah je potrebno povisiti naopon i iznad 1,4 volta, a sudeći po rezultatima ostalih testova dostupnih na mreži svih mreža to je nekakvo generalno pravilo.
