Intel Penryn i Nehalem - novosti

Nehalem pak predstavlja radikalni korak dalje po pitanju arhitekture procesora. Premda je baziran na sličnom principu kao postojeća arhitektura Core (4 instrukcije po taktu, kratki cjevovod, visoka efikasnost), donosi radikalne izmjene dosadašnjeg dizajna Intelovih procesora. Naime, Intel u jezgru procesoru namjerava integrirati memorijski kontroler (feature koji je već implementiran u AMD-ove Athlone 64) i zamjeniti klasičnu sistemsku sabirnicu sa serijskom poin-to-point vezom preko koje će procesor komunicirati s ostatkom sistema. Sličan princip komunikacije inače koristi glavni Intelov konkurent AMD na svojoj arhitekturi K8 koja je predstavljena prije par godina.

Nehalem predstavlja korak dalje

Ovo nije kraj novostima koje donosi Nehalem. Intel je naime ponovo odlučio implementirati SMT odosno Simultaneous Multi-Threading, feature koji smo imali prilike iskusiti u prethodnim generacijama Intelovih procesora pod imenom HyperThreading. Još uvijek nije poznato da li će tvrtka ponovo koristiti ovo ime za SMT tehnologiju implementiranu u nadolazeće procesore.

Intelov glasnogovornik (Stephen L Smith, Vice President Director, Digital Enterprise Group Operations) nije bio spreman precizirati strukturu cachea na arhitekturi Nehalem. U dokumentima se spominje višestupanjski dijeljeni cache, no nije jasno da li tvrtka planira imeplementirati još jedan stupanj cachea (L3) ili će biti zadržan postojeći princip s odvojenim L1 i dijeljenim L2 cacheom. Nehalem će također biti opremljen dodatnim mogućnostima kontrole i nadzora potrošnje što ne čudi s obzirom da 45-nanometarski proces omogućava proizvodnju osmerojezgrenih procesora.

Kompletna promjena platforme zajedno s novom arhitekturom

Budući da će memorijski kontroler biti prebačen u procesor, a FSB zamijenjen s novom vrstom serijske PtP veze, Nehalem će koristiti i sasvim novu vrstu platforme koja trenutno nosi kodno ime Kayman. Tvrtka obećava skalabilne performanse pri korištenju jednog do šesnaest ili više threadova koji će se izvoditi na jednoj do osam ili više jezgri.

Posljednja, ali ne i najmanje važna novost je integracija grafičke jezgre u procesor. Ovo je rješenje opcionalno, a biti će namijenjeno tržišnim segmentima gdje je u prvom redu potrebna optimizacija potrošnje, a performanse nisu toliko bitne. Drugim riječima, integriranu grafičku jezgru možemo očekivati kod procesora namijenjenih prijenosnicima te kod procesora namijenjenih poslovnim stolnim računalima. Integracija grafike u procesor je bila očekivan potez s obzirom da je glavni Intelov konkurent nakon preuzimanja kanadskog proizvođača grafičkih rješenja ATI-a najavio projekt pod imenom Fusion iza kojeg se također krije integracija grafičkih mogućnosti u višejezgreni procesor.

Derivati Nehalem jezgre kojima će Intel pokriti sve glavne tržišne spektre (mobilni, stolni i serverski) očekuju se tijekom sljedeće godine.
