Gigabyte GV-NX86S256H - DX10 za smrtnike

- Uvod -

NVIDIA je svojom DX10 kompatibilnom generacijom grafičkih kartica pomela high-end tržište, no svi oni koji nisu mogli ili željeli nabaviti jedan od modela GeForcea 8800 bili su primorani odabrati kartice bazirane na starijim DX9 kompatibilnim čipovima, bilo nVidije ili ATI-ja. Nedavno se situacija ipak promjenila i to predstavljanjem cijelog spektra DX10 kompatibilnih kartica koje su namijenjene srednjem i donjem segmentu tržišta. Gejmerima najzanimljivi mainstream segment popunjen je s čipovima GeForce 8600 GTS i GT, koji bi trebali zamijeniti vrlo popularne GeForce 7600 modele. Prva kartica bazirana na novom dizajnu koju smo imali prilike isprobati dolazi iz Gigabytea. Riječ je o modelu GV-NX86S256H koji je baziran na čipu GeForce 8600 GTS, a specijalan po tome što je na njemu implementirano Silent-pipe III pasivno hlađenje dizajnirano od strane Gigabytea.

Prije nego što se bacimo na samu karticu, recimo nešto i o novoj GeForce 8600 seriji GPU-a. Kao i uvijek do sada, novi mainstream GPU predstavlja osjetno oslabljenu verziju originalne high-end arhitekture. G84, što je kodno ime GeForce 8600 GPU-a, tako ima oko četiri puta manje izvršnih jedinica u odnosu na izvorni dizajn - samo 32 stream procesora, po 16 jedinica za adresiranje i filtiranje tekstura (Texture Address Unit, Texture Filtering Unit) te 8 ROP-a (Raster Operations Pipeline). Omjer jedinica za adresiranje i filtriranje tekstura promijenjen je u odnosu na snažnije kartice kod kojih je omjer TA i TF jedinica bio 1:2 dok je u slučaju GeForce 8600 omjer 1:1. Promjena ovih omjera trebala bi omogućiti stream procesorima efikasnije izvršavanje instrukcija, a time i bolje performanse.

Valja primjetiti da je ovakav dizajn nove mainstream ponude drugačiji od onog što smo imali prilike vidjeti do sad. Naime, generalno pravilo je do sada uvijek bilo da je čip namijenjen srednjem segmentu tržišta arhitekturalno upola manje moćan od izvorne arhitekture. U slučaju GeForce 8600 to nije tako budući da je arhitekturalno gledajući ovaj procesor od 3 do 4 puta slabiji od svojeg starijeg brata G80.

Ipak, treba imati na umu da u cijeloj priči igra ulogu i takt koji je kod novih kartica osjetno viši nego kod G80 derivata. Osnovni takt jezgre GTS modela je 675 MHz, interno SP-ovi kucaju na taktu od 1450 MHz dok je takt memorije kojoj kartica pristupa preko 128-bitne sabirnice 2 GHz DDR. Što se tiče slabijeg modela GT, njegovi taktovi su 540/1190 MHz (geometry/shader domain) te 1.4 GHz DDR za memoriju.

GeForce 8600 obitelj se može pohvaliti s jednim featureom koji nećemo naći kod snažnijih kartica, a to je dediciranim hardverskim dekoderom za H.264 algoritam, po pitanju performansi najzahtjevniji HD video algoritam koji se trenutno masovno koristi. NVIDIA tvrdi da ovo rješenje omogućava procesiranje H.264 videa s maksimalnim bitrateom od oko 40 Mbit/s bez intervencije procesora. To ipak ne znači da je procesor u potpunosti oslobođen opterećenja budući da se i dalje mora brinuti za I/O operacije, no prema NVIDIA, novo rješenje je daleko efikasnije u ovom pogledu nego sva ostala do sada. Kad je riječ o VC-1 codecu, video engine i dalje odrađuje većinu procesa dekodiranja, no prva faza - Bitstream processing i Entropy Decode, izvršavaju se u ovom slučaju na procesoru.

Što se pak detalja proizvodnog procesa tiče, nema nikakvih novosti - i dalje se koristi TSMC-ov low-k 80-nanometarski proces. S obzirom da je G84 arhitekturalno mnogo manje zahtjevan u odnosu na G80 odnosno ima mnogo manje tranzistora, sve je smješteno direkno na jedan komad silicija. Ako se sjećate, kod G80 jedan je dio logike smješten na vanjskom čipu. Potrošnja kartice nije velika, čak nazivno jačeg modela GTS, pa niti ne zahtjeva dodatni konektor za napajanje. Ipak, treba napomenuti da je nVidia odluku o stavljanju dodatnog konektora prepustila svojim partnerima
