AMD ATi HD3870 X2 - dvoglavo čudovište

- Uvod i opis -
Danas AMD predstavlja najnoviju ATi grafičku karticu kojom nakon duže vremena cilja na sam vrh tržišta. Model koji predstavlja zove se Radeon HD3870 X2 a baziran je na dobro nam poznatom RV670 čipu, da budemo precizniji na njih dva, koji se nalaze na istoj tiskanoj ploči. Glasine o ovoj kartici vjerojatno ste imali prilike pročitati tijekom zadnjih nekoliko mjeseci, no spominjano je samo njeno razvojno ime – R680. Karticu smo usporedili sa proizvodima kojima bi ona trebala biti tržišni konkurent, a to su dva nVidijina modela 8800GT 512MB u SLI konfiguraciji. U test smo ubacili i dvije HD3870 kartice u GeCube X-Turbo III izdanju, da vidimo da li postoje razlike između CrossFire načina rada dva RV670 čipa i načina na koji su povezani u HD3870 X2 kartici.

S obzirom kako je sve vezano uz GPU na HD3870 X2 duplo, dolazimo do brojki od 640 stream procesora, 32 teksturne jedinice i 32 render jedinice, tj. 1,332 milijarde tranzistora koji joj daju računsku snagu od preko jednog teraflopa što su priznati ćete prilično impresivne brojke. GPU naravno podržava DX10.1, što podrazumijeva SM4.1, 32 bitno FPU filtriranje itd te OpenGL 2.0 standard. Grafički čipovi rade na 825MHz (sjetimo se da RV670 čipovi rade na 775MHz), a međusobno su povezani PCIe (v1.1) preklopnikom koji je proizvod kompanije PLX. Taj preklopnik bi mogao biti i potencijalno usko grlo jer sa svakim GPU-om komunicira preko "samo" 8 PCIe linija. Jedna od prednosti korištenja ovakvog riješenja je da korisnici ne moraju kupovati iznimno skupe matične ploče sa 4 PCI-E utora da bi upogonili četiri HD3870 kartice u Crossfireu. Sada je dovoljno imati 2 PCI-E utora i uživati u četiri GPU-a na dvije kartice. S druge strane izradu ovakvih ili sličnih kartica u prošlosti nisu pratili sjajni prodajni rezultati (iako je izvedbom drugačija sjetimo se nVidijine 7950 GX2, pa Sapphire-ove Radeon X1950 Pro Dual itd.), te je često pokazatelj kako proizvođači u datom trenutku nemaju pravo single-chip rješenje. Čini se kako je to slučaj i sa ATi-em koji već duže vremena ne može parirati nVidiji. Ipak, moguće je da je ovaj proizvod nagovještaj budućnosti, kada će sve kartice imati dva ili više GPU-a, samo je pitanje da li u ovom obliku ili spojene u jednoj jezgri. HD3870X2 ima samo jedan CrossFire konektor što znači da ih najviše možemo spojiti dvije u CrossFire.

Memorijski kontroler sa 512-bitnim unutarnjim dizajnom dopušta korištenje memorije po GPU-u što bi značilo da će AMD-ovi partneri biti u mogućnosti opremiti ove kartice sa 2GB memorije. U našem slučaju kartica je bila opremljena sa 1GB GDDR3 memorije koja radi na 900MHz (efektivno 1800MHz). GDDR3 memorija je korištena zbog snižavanja troškova proizvodnje, istog razloga zbog kojeg na karticu nije implementiran PCIe 2.0 preklopnik. Za učinkovito baratanje električnom energijom brine se ATI PowerPlay tehnologija (nadzire rad GPU-a te dinamički mijenja taktove i napone u ovisnosti o opretećenju). Zahvaljujući ovoj tehnologiji, AMD-ove stolne kartice imaju vrlo nisku potrošnju kad nisu pod opterećenjem. Što se tiče načina napajanja, kartica zahtjeva dva 6-pinska PCIe konektora ili jedan 6-pinski i jedan 8-pinski, jednako kao stariji Radeon HD 2900 XT. Korištenje 8-pinskog konektora preporučeno je za korisnike koji karticu planiraju overclockirati.

Dual-slot aluminijski hladnjak je masivan a novina je i aluminijska ploča sa donje starne kartice. Zanimljivo je da nema traga toplovodnim cijevima, tehnologiji koja se nametnula kao najbolje rješenje za implementaciju zračnog hlađenja. Ugrađeni ventilator je u većini slučajeva prilično tih, no s obzirom da se kartica dosta grije tu i tamo se prilikom vršnih opterećenja zna "zaletiti" u visoke okretaje kada postaje bučan, ali to na sreću ne traje dugo. Ostale karakteristike su već dobro poznate a uključuju Unified Video Decoder (H.264/AVC i VC-1) koji omogućava reprodukciju HD DVD i Blu-Ray sadržaja u 1080p, zatim Ultimate Image Quality koji nadmašuje 1080p standard te omogućuje rezolucije do 2560x1600. HDMI je također podržan i to preko dodatnog adaptera za DVI-I, a ugrađen je i AMD-ov Xilleon HDTV koder. Toliko u teoretskom dijelu. Bacimo se na testiranje.
