Nakon duuuge ljetne stanke eto i Intelovca natrag u PCEkspert.

U zadnje vrijeme dolazi do previranja na tržištu procesora. Dva glavna igrača, Intel i AMD, pokušavaju dobiti što više uz što manje ulaganja. Tako bismo saželi situaciju.

Da pojasnimo. AMD već zadnjih godinu dana nije izbacio ništa novo. Od pojave Athlona na 1.0GHz koji je bio verzija procesora s K75 jezgrom, nije ulagano u neku smislenu produkciju, već je samo podizan takt procesora uz podizanje radnog napona i naravno potrošnju, tako da sada imamo Athlone koji isijavaju i do 80W topline (hvala Bogu da je izašao AthlonXP koji sije "samo" oko 65W). Intel pak isto spava na lovorikama. Od izlaska P3, debakla s 1.13GHz verzijom koja je propala zbog toga jer je prekasno uočeno da postojeća platforma neće moći izdržati tolike brzine, ni kod njega ništa novog. No, ne bili nekako spasili golu kožu izbacuju P4. Da li on donosi nešto revolucionarno? Pa baš i ne (osim NetBust tehnologije i PipeLinea koji je sad dug 20 koraka, povećanja frekvencije i koječega). To je ustvari opet Pentium na super steroidima.

i845

Povod ovog članka je novi Intelov chipset koji je razvijan pod kodnim nazivom Brookdale. Kako su s gnušanjem odbacili SDRAM platformu memorije, tako su je i prigrlili na mala vrata. No, i845 ne donosi ništa revolucionarno i napredno - klasični chipset koji omogućuje upotrebu SDRAM-a na P4 platformi. Za razliku od starijeg i850 chipseta, novi nema dvokanalnu komunikaciju s memorijom i umjesto 3.2GB/s donosi samo 1.06GB/s. Ova razlika upada dosta u oči, ali kad se pogledaju testovi rađeni sa Sandrom, brzina se čini podosta velika.

Obično su rezultati kod Athlona i P3 procesora negdje do 400-450MB/s. Kako je riječ ipak o brzini prijenosa podataka između MCH i procesora 3.2GB/s, izgleda da se nešto dobiva i tim vakumom s druge strane.

Naravno i850 pere ko lud. Dvostruki memorijski kanal propušta 3.2GB/s i mete sve pred sobom. Trebalo bi opskrbiti sistem s maksimumom memorije i pogledati kako bi se to odrazilo na aplikacije koje aktivno koriste memoriju. Quake3 recimo. :-)

Nastavak priče bi trebao krenuti negdje početkom sljedeće godine kada Intel izbacuje i845 koji podržava DDR RAM. Da li će biti išta od toga? Pa mi mislimo da teško. Zar će Intel s DDR-om preskočiti RDRAM u brzini i popljuvati godinu dana ulaganja u tip memorije za koji nitko nije ni čuo prije nego što je krenuo s P4 (osim nesretnika koji su nasjeli na i820 chipset). Ipak mislimo da će u novom chipsetu negdje biti ručna koja će usporavati rad ne bili ipak DDR bio drugi na cilju, odmah iza RDRAM-a.

Socket 478

Uz novi chipset i novi socket, kako bi zabuna naravno bila što veća. Novi chipset donosi smanjenje veličine samog procesora koji je sada smanjen na termičku pločicu ispod koje se nalaze pinovi. Termičku ploćicu lijepi sam Intel kako bi disperzija topline bila što bolja. I možemo vam reći da to stvarno radi. Kontakt između coolera i procesora je puno veći i sigurniji, tako da više nema frke oko toga da li je procesor na cooleru ili zijeva. Do samog fizičkog smanjenja procesora je došlo radi toga jer nova generacija P4 procesora kodnog naziva Northwood, dolazi u izradi na 0.13 mikrona. Kako će doći do fizičkog smanjenja razmaka tranzistora od skoro 1/3, tako će i sama jezgra procesora biti za toliko manja od postojeće. Montaža coolera je mnogo jednostavnija, ali nama ipak fali ona stara mrcina od zelenog podnožja.
