Test Athlon/AthlonXP platformi

- Uvod -

Nakon što smo testirali AthlonXP nedugo nakon njegovog izlaska, dali smo obećanje da to neće biti naš zadnji test novog AMD-ovog procesora. Tako ćemo se u ovom članku pozabaviti performansama AthlonXP procesora na različitim platformama, tj. na tri različita Socket-A chipseta - na VIA KT133A (SDR), VIA KT266A i AMD761 (oba DDR).

AthlonXP - razlog ovog testa

Prije nego što počnemo s rezultatima naših benchova, pozabavit ćemo se ponašanjem AthlonXP procesora na KT133A pločama. Naime, ubrzo nakon izlaska AthlonXP procesora proizvođači matičnih ploča izvijestili su da ovi procesori rade samo na novijim revizijama KT133A ploča. Npr. po ABIT-u samo KT7A ploče revizije 1.3 i više rade s AthlonomXP, a po ASUS-u A7V133 mora biti revizije 1.05 ili kasnije da bi sve bilo kako treba. Mi smo pak AthlonXP procesor isprobali na svojoj standardnoj test ploči - ABIT-u KT7A-RAID i sve je radilo (i radi) kako treba iako je naša ploča revizije 1.0! Kako sad pak to? Razlog ovakvoj "zbrci" leži u tome što je AMD promijenio ponašanje svojih procesora prilikom inicijalnog bootanja. Prilikom dizanja sistema ploča isproba tri linije za podatke putem kojih onda dobije točan množitelj samog procesora. AMD je kod AthlonaXP promijenio timing tako da ove tri linije postanu aktivne 100ns nakon što je prihvaćen vcore power OK signal (PWROK). Ako ploča nema hardversku podršku za to kašnjenje može krivo protumačiti rezultate te tri (FID(0:3)) linije te samim time i množitelj procesora. Rezultat toga može biti da se sistem uopće ne želi podignuti ili da ne radi stabilno. Kako je tih 100ns izuzetno malo, tj. promjena je minimalna, neke starije ploče (kao naša) će raditi kako treba. S druge strane, kako nikakav BIOS update ne može izliječiti ploču da radi, proizvođači su se ogradili od starijih ploča. Novije revizije rade jer je AMD u svojim tehničkim papirima dokumentirao ovu promjenu. Nažalost, promjena je objelodanjena tek nakon što je već velik broj KT133A ploča bio na tržištu, što ide na dušu AMD-a. Nadamo se da AMD neće nastaviti ovakav trend te se po tom pitanju približiti Intelu.
