- Malo o Flash SSD tehnologiji -
Sigurni smo kako svi sve znate o SSD (Solid State Drive) diskovima jer su već neko vrijeme prisutni na tržištu, a i tehnologija na kojoj se baziraju nije nova. Ipak, za one koji prvi puta čuju da postoji nešto što se zove SSD i da će to u budućnosti zamijeniti tvrde diskove kakve ih danas poznajemo, evo nekoliko informacija:

Povijest razno raznih SSD uređaja je vrlo duga (seže još u eru računala sa vakuumskim cijevima), no nikada nisu šire prihvaćeni zbog visoke cijene. Moderniji SSD uređaji su prvi puta razvijeni krajem sedamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća, a 1995. godine su se pojavili prvi SSD-i bazirani na flash memoriji kakve danas poznajemo. 2007. godina je vrlo bitna jer su se na tržištu po prvi puta pojavili uređaji kapaciteta 1GB i veći, koji su se ugrađivali u razne netbookove i subnotebookove. Danas kapaciteti širem tržištu dosupnih SSD-ova dosežu 256GB, a Toshiba je za ovu godinu najavila proizvodnju 512GB modela.

Tehnologija koja stoji iza SSD-a najčešće počiva na NAND flash neizbrisivoj memoriji koja se pakira u standardne 1.8", 2.5" i 3.5" formate. Prednosti neizbrisivog NAND-a su što zadržava podatke i tijekom iznenadnih prekida dotoka struje, no zato su sporije od standardnih DRAM uređaja, ali u nekim slučajevima i tradicionalnih tvrdih diskova. Zbog toga se u SSD uređaje ugrađuju i male količine DRAM memorije kako bi se povećale performanse, a veća brzina se postiže i zbog same činjenice kako su NAND čipovi u SSD-u paralelizirani. Kako bi dodatno ubrzali rad, Micron koristiti tehnologiju segmentacije logički slijednih podataka (slično RAID-u 0), te multipleksiranje. Prednosti NAND-a se očituju i u činjenici da dolazi sa integriranim kontrolerom, koji se brine o upravljanju loših blokova i algoritama za izjednačavanje istrošenosti. Ovo proizvođačima dozvoljava prodaju NAND memorija sa nekoliko loših blokova, što povećava proizvodnju i u konačnici snižava cijenu.

Sada kada znate nešto više o NAND-u, potrebno je znati kako flash memorije mogu doći u SLC (Single-level cell ) te MLC (Multi-level cell) izvedbama. Ove dvije izvedbe su vrlo slične po dizajnu, no različite po karakteru. SLC memorija može spremiti samo jedan nivo napona (bit) u ćeliju, dok MLC kao što mu ime govori može spremiti minimalno dva bita. Zbog toga su SLC izvedbe nešto brže, dugotrajnije, otpornije na visoku temperaturu i energetski efikasnije. S druge strane, MLC je jeftiniji i dozvoljava veću gustoću zapisa. Upravo iz tog razloga će te na tržištu naći znatno više MLC SSD-a, koji imaju veliki kapacitet, te povoljniju cijenu. Ipak, potrebno je posebno napomenuti jednu bitnu razliku između dvije izvedbe, a ta je da SLC izdrži 100.000 ciklusa brisanja, dok MLC izdrži "samo" 10.000, zbog čega je SLC primjereniji industrijskoj upotrebi.

Prednosti u odnosu na tvrde diskove su svakako brže pokretanje (nema spin-upa), praktički nepostojeće vrijeme pristupa za čitanje podataka, niske latencije, brzi zapis podataka, nemaju pokretnih dijelova koji povećavaju potrošnju, zagrijavanje i buku, veća mehanička i termalna otpornost , te manje dimenzije i masa. Nedostaci su za sada manji kapacitet i viša cijena, ograničeni ciklusi brisanja, niže brzine zapisa (kod SSD-a sa jeftinijim kontrolerima) i manja gustoća zapisa.

Što se tiče budućnosti SSD-ova, sve njihove prednosti će ostati, dok će se neki od nedostataka ispraviti ili barem umanjiti te ćemo na tržištu imati sve više ovakvih uređaja, koji će u potpunosti istisnuti klasične 2.5" diskove u prijenosnim računalima svih tipova. Isto tako je za očekivati i kako ćemo 3.5" diskove uskoro zamijeniti sa 2.5" SSD-ima, koji će se prodavati uz adaptere za ugradnju u 3.5" prostore. Danas ćemo se pozabaviti sa jeftinijim pripadnikom MLC SSD obitelji koji ima kapacitet 128GB, te SATA II sučelje. G.Skill inače u ponudi ima i SLC diskove, a ono što je posebno zanimljivo je kako su najaviti novu seriju SSD-a - TITAN, maksimalnog kapaciteta 256GB te većih brzina zapisa i čitanja.
