DDR 400

- Uvod i DDR240 -

Još prije godinu i pol dana pokušavali smo nabrijavati stare dobre SDRAM memorijske module na što veći radni takt i spuštat latenciju što više. U to vrijeme nismo znali za memorijske množitelje već smo muku mučili sa djeljiteljima AGP-a i PCI sabirnica. Onda je došao AMD Thunderbird i posegao za DDR memorijom. Isprva nitko nije znao ni otkud ni zašto jer je DDR dotad bio poznat samo na grafičkim karticama. AMD-ovci su dobili nekih 15-20% na performansama a Intelov P3 je sa DDR-om funkcionirao kao sveta vodica (nit pomaže nit odmaže). AMD je u to vrijeme imao nekoliko chipseta( KT266, AMD760 i SiS735) koji su kombinirano podržavali SDRAM i DDR. Kako je sjedenje na dve stolice nepraktično, moralo se čekati do pojave KT266A chispeta da bi se mogle iskoristiti u potpunosti mogučnosti DDR-a. P3 nije dobio nikakav novi chipset pa Intelašima DDR dugo nije bio zanimljiv. Pojavom P4 procesora uletio je RDRAM u igru sasvojim vrhunskim performansama koje je pratila i vrhunska cijena. Na mala vrata su se tu ugurali SiS i VIA sa svojim chispetima koji još ni danas nemaju komplet regulirana licenčna prava oko proizvodnje chipseta, SiS sa svojim 645 i VIA sa svojim P4X266. Kako do tada SiS nije imao pošteni chipset a VIA imala problema sa driverima, nitko njje obračao pažnju na njih. Moram priznati da nismo ozbiljno shvaćali podršku za DDR333 SiS-ovog chipseta ali praktična testiranja odagnala su te sumnje. SiS se pokazao pravom zvijeri a VIA je opet malo zakasnila sa odgovarajućim driverima i podrškom za DDR333.

Kako se u zadnje vrijme govori o DDR400 i sljedećem standardu DDR II , htjeli smo vidjeti kako daleko mogu dogurati SiS sa najbržom memorijom na tržištu.

 

Samsung DDR333 TCB3

Za ostvarenje planiranih DDR400 koristili smo Samsung DDR333 sa TCB3 revizijom memorijskih čipova. Kako na netu možemo pronaći nismo usamljeni u dostizanju magičnih 400. Pogledajte na ovom linku podatke o istoj brzini ali doduše na AMD platformi. Njihovi su rezultati nešto bolji (CAS 2 2-2-5) zato jer su oni imali mogučnost podizanja napona memorije što mi nismo mogli.

Za samo testiranje koristili smo MSI645Ultra matičnu ploču sa SiS645 chipsetom. Procesor je P4 1.8A (Northwood jezgra) koji se pokazao stabilnim do 2.7GHz (150 MHz fsb-a),a u ovom slučaju je radio na 120MHz fsb-a uz napon od 1.625 na brzini od 2.16GHz. Da bi na najbolji moguči način pokazali koristnost velike memorijske propustnosti poslužili smo se mogučnostima SiS645 chipseta. Odabrali smo brzinu fsb-a od 120MHz i mjenjali množitelje. Na izboru su nam bili sljedeći množitelji; 1:1, 4:3 i 5:3. To nam je na kraju davalo sljedeće brzine memorije: 120, 160 i 200MHz, što bi u DDR obliku (X 2) izgledalo kao 240, 320 i 400MHz ili po službenoj nomenklaturi otprilike PC1900, PC 2600 i PC3300.

Memorija je bila podešena na CAS2 3-3-6 i radila je na naponu od 2.5V. Na niže postavke CAS latencije nismo išli jer ju memorija nije ni mogla izdržati na višim frekvencijama. Da matična ploča podržava podizanje napona memorije, moguće da bi i CAS2 2-2-5 bilo ostvarivo na DDR400.

Zašto nismo radili mjerenja na DDR266-333-400? Pa da smo radili na taj način morali smo mjenjat brzinu sabirnice (procesor nije unlockan) pa mjerenja nebi više bila realna. Ovako imamo procesor i periferiju koji rade na stalnim brzinama, a jedino šta mijenjamo je množitelj prema memoriji. Tako da su nam zbog toga ispale pomalo čudne dvije niže brzine. Ali zato radi toga imamo DDR400 kao najveću ostvarenu brzinu.

Sva mjerenja su rađena sa SiSoft Sandrom i netreba ih uzimati kao realna. Zašto? Pa kako se kod nas pokazalo Sandra ima različite rezultate na svakom sistemu. Tako da su rezultati relativni ali ono šta smo htjeli prikazati je razlika između njih. To se može uzeti kao relativni pokazatelj ubrzanja.

3DMark2001 je korišten kako bi se pokazalo realno ubrzanje i dobitak sa programima koji koriste DirectX. Neka daljnja mjerenja tipa SpecViewerf nismo radili jer mislimo daje na ovaj način dovoljno dobro prikazana razlika u brzinama.

Prvi setting je pomalo čudan jer memorija radi na 120MHz (DDR 240) što je daleko ispod onog šta se može dobiti na tržištu. Ali na taj način najbolje se pokazuje memorijska propustnost slabijih verzija memorije(PC2100 ili čak PC1600). Propustnost je minimalna i daleko zaostaje za ostalim platformama. Visok rezultat u 3DMark-u je više zasluga grafičke kartice koja je radila na 250/490MHz. Na ovim postavkama memorija je radila i na CAS2 2-2-5 ali te rezultate ne možemo onda kasnije uspoređivati sa ostalima jer memorija nije na njima radila na DDR320 i 400.
