Djiber's Guide to Overclocking

S obzirom na činjenicu da jako često dobijamo vaše e-mailove u kojima se interesirate o overklokiranju dobio sam zadatak od svog voljenog šefa da nam svima olakšam život i napišem početnički vodič na tu temu. Za početak bih htio upozoriti na to da za sva moguća oštećenja računalnih komponenti i gubitke podataka izazvane postupcima opisanim u ovom tekstu ne odgovaramo. Dakle sve što radite radite na svoju odgovornost. Mijenjanje orginalnih postavki uređaja, dizanje radnog takta procesora i slične stvari nose sa sobom itekakav rizik i za njih je potrebno znanje i iskustvo. Tekst je pisan pod predpostavkom da čitatelj poznaje osnovnu građu računala, zna što je BIOS i kako doći do njega itd... Princip overklokiranja se zasniva na činjenici da računalne komponente, s ovim prvenstveno mislim na CPU, grafičku karticu i memoriju zbog teme ovog teksta, nisu izrađene savršeno. Dakle, npr. procesor na kojem piše da radi na 1GHz nije izrađen nimalo tehnološki drukčije od procesora istog tipa koji radi na 1.2 GHz. Jedina razlika je u tome što je brži procesor imao pri testiranju brzine u tvornici bolju toleranciju i pokazao se bolje izrađen. Ako se pitate kako to zapravo izgleda, pojednostavljeni opis slijedi. Inženjeri dizajniraju novu vrstu procesora i naprave par prototipa koji dobiju zeleno svjetlo za masivnu produkciju. Wafferi koji izrađuju milijune tranzistora na velikoj silicijskoj ploči se programiraju za novu vrstu arhitekture. U Waffere se stavljaju velike ploče silicija na koje, uvjetno rečeno, urezuju komponente jezgre procesora. Nakon toga se cijela ploča reže na dijelove od kojih svaki čini jednu jezgru procesora. Jezgre se testiraju po brzini, neke ne rade, neke ne zadovoljavaju brzinske kriterije, i sve to ide u smeće. Ostale jezgre su skalirane po brzini, pakiraju se u kućišta (npr. keramička, a u novije vrijeme i plastična) i šalju se na tržište. Što je proizvodni proces bolji to ima više bržih procesora, što vuće za sobom zaključak da proizvođači često na brži procesor stavljaju oznaku manje brzine radi veće potražnje jeftinijih procesora na tržištu. Dakle za dobar overclocking je potrebna i sreća i kupovina procesora s dobrom brzinskom tolerancijom. Zbog toga se može čuti i pročitati kako ljudi komentiraju razne serije istog tipa procesora i njihove overclocking karakteristike. S druge strane, na overklokiranje dosta ljudi u svijetu gleda po principu "diži kolko' ide". Da pojasnim malo, govorim o ljudima koji izvade procesor i matičnu ploču van kućišta i sve zaliju tekućim dušikom iz bačve od pedeset litara. Istina da će se radni takt procesora moći dignuti za nekakvih 80%, ali u čemu je smisao? Ja nemam namjeru imati fizičkog radnika sa strane koji će rashlađivat atmosferu dok ja igram Il-2 Strumovik i rušim švabe iznad majčice Rusije. Smisao overklokiranja je u tome da se izvuku maksimalne performanse iz sustava bez gubitka stabilnosti. Po tom načelu je i napisan ovaj vodič.

 

Temperatura = Neprijatelj

Bilo koji uređaj koji radi na električnu energiju se zagrijava. Glavni problem dizanja radnog takta računalnih komponenti je temperatura. Sve se zagrijava, od napajanja, matične ploče, diskova do procesora i grafičke kartice. Taj nusprodukt topline je loš i negativno utječe na trajnost komponenti, njihove performanse i stabilnost. Komponente kod kojih je to zagrijavanje najviše izraženo su CPU i grafička kartica. Zato su na njima uobičajeni aktivni i pasivni hladnjaci koji poboljšavaju disipaciju topline na okolni zrak. Bolje hlađenje-bolji overclock i stabilnost. Dobro sređeno hlađenje podrazumijeva kvalitetan hladnjak na procesoru, hladnjake na hard diskovima, aktivno hlađenje na grafičkoj kartici i prostrano kućište s dobrim protokom zraka (čitaj - dobro postavljenim ventilatorima). Naravno, to su idealni uvjeti. Kad bi navodio samo najosnovnije, rekao bih da su to redom hladnjak na procesoru i dobra ventilacija kućišta. Naći dobar hladnjak za CPU nije teško, ali zahtijeva pregled mnoštva recenzija na Internetu. Dodatna poteškoća je i u tome što većinu visokokvalitetnih hladnjaka nije moguće nabaviti u Hrvatskoj i kupnja preko Interneta ili stric u Njemačkoj su jedine opcije. Što se ventilatora tiče situacija je puno bolja, ali za ugradnju ventilatora na prava mjesta potrebno je zasukati rukave i uzeti pilu za metal u ruke. Još jedna sitnica - vrlo je važno imati kvalitetnu termovodljivu pastu na procesoru (tj.jezgri procesora). Pasta služi da bi popunila nepravilnosti na površini hladnjaka, tj. da bi prijelaz topline s jezgre na hladnjak bio lakši. Nanosi se u vrlo tankom sloju na jezgru, nije dobro ni kad je ima premalo ni kad je ima previše. Kod nas je moguće nabaviti Artic Silver II pastu koja je vrlo kvalitetna i vrijedi novaca uloženih u nju (temperatura pada za 3-7 stupnjava). Toliko o toplini.
