Pentium III 650 overclocking

Lijepo smo stavili procesor na matičnu ploču i pokrenuli cijelu stvar. Windowsi su se sretno digli pa smo počeli sa programima za ugrijavanje procesora. Naime, opće je poznato da novim komponentama treba oko dva dana rada da se "ugriju". Dva dana smo tako vrtili SETI@Home i Prime 95. Sve je bilo u redu te smo krenuli u overclocking. Pentium III 650 je bez problema radio na 728MHz (6,5x112), pa onda i na 806MHz (6,5x124), i to sve na tvorničkom naponu od 1,65V. Bili smo vrlo zadovoljni jer je cilj od 866MHz bio jako blizu. No...

Na 133MHz sistem nije htio ni POST-ati. Prvo smo mislili da je procesor uzrok te smo dignuli voltažu. Nije pomoglo. Onda nam je palo na pamet da bi uzrok mrtvilu sistema mogla biti memorija. Memorija koju smo koristili jest 133MHz no na toj frekvenciji nije htjela raditi s ABIT BE6 pločom pa da se čovjek na glavu postavi. Trebalo nam je par dana da nabavimo novu memoriju koja je radila s BE6 bez problema. Dignuli smo brzinu na 866MHz i Windowsi su se sretno digli. Pola sata kasnije Prime 95 je stao radi greške pa smo povećali napon na 1,7V i tako par puta dok se nismo zaustavili na 1,8V. Tu je napokon sve bilo 100% stabilno. Pustili smo Prime 95 da se vrti dva dana bez prestanka i sve je prošlo kako treba.

Pokušaji da još više overclock-amo Pentium III 650 nisu urodili plodom. Sistem bi POST-ao na 910MHz, ali bi se srušio prilikom boot-anja Windowsa. Nije pomoglo ni dizanje voltaže na 1,85V. Više od toga nismo mogli povećati napon jer BE6 kroz BIOS dozvoljava povećanje napona do maksimalno cca. +10% od tvorničkog. Brusiti pin kao što smo učinili na P3-450 nam se nije dalo. Tako i tako na 910MHz ne bi ništa testirali jer takav Pentium ne postoji. Nakon toga nam je grafička kartica počela stvarati probleme. AGP Frekvencija od 89MHz (2/3 od 133MHz) bila je jednostavno previše za TNT2 Ultru. Problem smo riješili uz pomoć EnTech Powerstripa na taj način da smo isključili SBA (sideband addressing) grafičke kartice. Nakon toga sve je radilo kako treba pa smo se mogli posvetiti i mjerenju performansi.
