ATI Radeon 9000

Ako ste se slučajno zapitali čime se vaš omiljeni pcekspertovac (tj. skromni ja) bavi u ovim prohladnim i kišovitim danima, dopada vas odgovor u obliku slatke male recenzije. Ne računajući kašljanje i šmrcanje, prilično lošu 'uradi sam' frizuru i prodaju pola 'testne' mašine jedno me jesensko jutro stigla i zaslužena kazna u obliku no-name ATI Radeon 9000 grafičke kartice sa 128 MB memorije. Osim dotičnog ATI-a pod ruke mi je podletio i Gainward GF4 Ti4200 namijenjen kolegi Premecu. Pošto je moja bivša GF2 GTS (pozdrav Greg) bila malčice neadekvatna za usporedbu sa novim Radeon-om Gainward-ica ju je morala zamijeniti.

Gainward GF4 Ti4200 sa poznatom 'turbinom'

Mada se ja baš i ne volim raspisivati o samoj tehnologiji koja stoji iza nekog komada hardvera ipak je potrebno razjasniti neke stvari. Što nam to donosi Radeon 9000 kao nova ATI-eva value kartica? Sa Radeon-om 9000 i njegovim bržim 'bratom' Radeon-om 9000 Pro ATI je krenuo u novu ofenzivu na tržište jeftinih kartica u cijenovnom razredu ispod 1300 kn-a. Za razliku od nVidia GF4 MX kartica koje su u biti hibridi izmedju stare GF2 tehnologije i noviteta predstavljenih sa GF3 karticama, kartica koje interno podržavaju samo DX 7.1 API, nemaju Pixel shader i hardverski Vertex shader, ATI predstavlja DX 8.1 baziranu karticu koja podržava sve trenutno aktualne tehnologije. Radeon 9000 (radno ime R250) je u osnovi razvijen od Radeon-a 8500 (radno ime R200). Same razlike između GPU-a se svode na broj teksturnih jedinica (Texture units) koje je moguće poslati Pixel pipeline-om i brojem tekstura primjenjivim po jednoj teksturnoj jedinici koja se šalje kroz Pixel pipeline. Govoreći sirovim brojevima i R200 (Radeon 8500) i R250 (Radeon 9000) imaju 4 Pixel pipeline-a, ali dok Radeon 8500 može kroz svaki pipeline poslati 2 teksturne jedinice sa po 3 teksture po jedinici Radeon 9000 šalje samo jednu teksturnu jedinicu sa 6 apliciranih tekstura.

'Neugledni' ATI Radeon 9000

Teoretski bi se moglo reći da Radeon 9000 zbog takve arhitekture trpi veće gubitke u performansama u igrama sa puno multitexturing-a dok u teksturno jednostavnijem igrama briljira. Osim toga Radeon 9000 sadrži samo jedan Vertex shader u usporedbi sa Radeon-om 8500 koji ih ima 2. Taj koncept je preuzet od Radeon-a 9700 Pro, prema ATI-u taj jedan Vertex shader bi zbog novije arhitekture trebao davati jednake ili bolje performanse u usporedbi sa dva stara Vertex shader-a. Sa svojom novom generacijom grafičkih procesora ATI je postigao izuzetno visok nivo integracije na samom GPU-u. Rage Theater chip, koji se na R8500 nalazio kao zasebni chip zalemljen na karticu, na novim Radeon-ima dolazi integriran u sam GPU. U GPU su također integrirana dva RAMDAC-a (2x400 MHz, Hydravision) i cijeli sklop za TV-out funkciju. Kao zadnji novitet treba spomenuti i tehnologiju pod nazivom Fullstream. O čemu se radi? U današnje internet doba jako je aktualan streaming video. S obzirom na ograničenja koja nameće internet, prvenstveno bandwidth, u većini slučajeva smo primorani trpjeti video sadržaje vrlo upitne kvalitete. Tu u igru ulazi Fullstream tehnologija pomoću koje se hardverski (pomoću pixel shader-a) 'izglađuje' te iste sadržaje upitne kvalitete. Naravno za to je potrebna i određena softverska podrška u obliku programa koji znaju iskoristiti tu novu tehnologiju. Trenutno ovu tehnologiju podržava samo Real player, ali Fullstream bi prema ATI-u trebali podržati i mnogi drugi multimedijalni programi. Toliko o tehnologiji iza Radeon-a 9000.
