AMD Radeon HD6990 - moćna i rastrošna

HD6990 se kao što smo rekli sastoji od dva Cayman XT čipa na istom PCB-u pa je njena dužina jednostavno impresivna. I dok je HD5970 mjerila 29,6 centimetara, ova se protegla još jedan centimetar više. Jasno je kako neće stati u baš svako kućište, pa će na to budući kupci morati dobro paziti. Što se dizajna oklopa tiče, on prati sve do sada viđeno kod serije 6, no naravno izduženije. Turbinski 7 centimetarski ventilator je smješten na samoj sredini oklopa između dva GPU-a, tj. njihovih hladnjaka. Stražnja je strana rešetkasta baš kao i prednja, pa topli zrak iz ove kartice izlazi u dva smjera. Sa stražnje gornje su se strane okomito na karticu smjestila dva 8-pinska PCIe Power konektora, a s prednje CrossFireX konektor te BIOS prekidač. HD6990 u kućištu zauzima dva slota, pa s te strane nema novosti, a sa stražnje će strane ATX ploču nadmašiti za otprilike 6 centimerata. Slike koje će te vidjeti u ovom dijelu opisa smo dobili od AMD-a, stoga jer su sugerirali da se kartice dobivene na test ne otvaraju. Po njima, razlog tome je što nakon otvaranja podloške između čipova i hladnjaka napravljene od novog materijala više nisu jednako efikasne pa rashladni sistem više nema tvorničke performanse. S obzirom da kartica koju smo dobili mora ići i u druge redakcije na test razumljivo je da nismo htjeli forsirati otvaranje.

Dva su Cayman XT čipa smještena na suprotnim stranama PCB-a (kod HD5970 su bliže jedan drugome i pokriveni zajedničkim heatsinkom), a oko svakoga se nalazi pripadajućih mu 2GB GDDR5 memorije (s prednje i stražnje strane PCB-a). Poveznica između čipova je kao i do sada PLX-ov PEX 8647kontroler, a kontrola napajanja je u odnosu na prethodnu seriju pojačana i dizajnirana je za pružanje stabilnih 450W električne energije kartici. Ugrađeni su programabilni Volterra regulatori (VT1556MF) koji trebaju osigurati veću efikasnost i bolje napajanje strujom, uz niže zagrijavanje i potrošnju u odnosu na stariji dizajn. Napojna je jedinica postavljena simetrično, ne sredinu PCB-a, tako da isporuka struje za oba GPU-a i memorijske čipove bude čim efikasnija. Uz to, ASIC-i (application-specific integrated circuit) su odabrani za visoke brzine i malo curenje struje. Sva je ta silna regulacija potrebna za napajanje dva Cayman XT čipa koji na ovoj kartici standardno rade na 830MHz. Iz toga proizlazi kako HD6990 ima 5.1 ReraFLOPs-a (Single Precision) i 1.27 TeraFLOPs-s (Double precision) računske snage. O VLIW4 shader arhitekturi smo već pisali pa to nećemo ponavljati. Dovoljno je znati kako kartica ukupno broji 3072 stream procesora, 192 teksturne jedinice, 64 ROP-a i 256 Z-stencila. Dovoljno je to za 159 GigaTexela/s i 53Gigapixela/s propusnosti. Na kartici se ukupno nalazi 4GB GDDR5 memorije sa 2 x 256 bitnim sučeljem (2GB po GPU-u), koja radi na 1250MHz ili 5Gbps efektivno. Memorijska propusnost iznosi lijepih 320GB/s. TDP ovako posložene kartice iznosi 375W, a za dodatno je napajanje potrebno prikopčati dva osam-pinska PCI-e konektora. Već i ova početna brojka izlazi iz standardnih PCIe specifikacija od 300W. No, AMD-u su se i ove brojke nekako činile premale (preniske performanse?), pa su iskoristili dizajn dva BIOS-a kako bi korisnicima omogućili još više performansi. Postavljanjem sklopke u drugi položaj podiže se napon GPU-a sa standardnih 1.12V na 1.175V, a brzina grafičkih čipova na 880MHz, tj. na punu brzinu Cayman XT-a. Time TDP skače na 450W, a podizanjem napona GPU-a podiže se i njegov overclocking kapacitet. Kako ovo funkcionira u praksi, tj. da li i koliko PowerTune koči overclocking vidjet ćemo kasnije u tekstu. Ovako tvornički overclockirana kartica sada ima računsku snagu od 5.4TeraFLOPs-a te propusnost od 169GigaTeksela/s i 56.3GigaPixela/s.

Spomenutih 450W TDP-a, velik je zalogaj za rashladni sistem pa ga je AMD nanovo presložio. Gornji je pokrov kartice plastičan, a vezan je na donju aluminijsku ploču koja pojačava strukturu, ali i služi kao heatsink. Ispod plastičnog pokrova, na svakom se od GPU-a nalazi masivni aluminijsko bakreni hladnjak sa Vapor tehnologijom baze. Između je postavljen 7 cm turbinski ventilator koji zrak uvlači iz vana te ga tjera van iz kartice kroz oba heatsinka. Preraspodjela je to koja donosi kvalitetnije hlađenje svih komponenata (pa tako i napojne jedinice) u odnosu na prethodno rješenje. Jasno je kako kod ovolikih vrijednosti TDP-a čitav sistem ne može biti tih i kako će korisnici ponovno morati prihvatiti činjenicu da uz visoke performanse dolazi i visoka buka. AMD tvrdi da je u odnosu na HD5970 protok zraka povećan za 20%, a kako točno sve funkcionira u praksi saznat ćemo iz testova zagrijavanja. Tipično pak opterećenje prilikom igranja ne bi trebalo prelaziti 350W na standardnim taktovima, te 415W na tvorničkim OC postavkama. U mirovanju bi u oba načina rada potrošnaj trebala iznositi 37W.

HD6990 donosi četiri miniDisplayPort (v.1.2) izlaza i jedan DL-DVI izlaz. Ovo automatski znači kako je na njega moguće spojiti do pet monitora u Eyefinity skupinu (sama kartica naravno podržava do šest monitora). Uz svaku će karticu dolaziti jedan miniDP-to-SL-DVI Passive adapter, jedan miniDP-to-SL-DVI Active adapter i jedan miniDP-to-HDMI passive adapter. Sam Eyefinity je poboljšan pa tako sa Catalyst 11.4 (testirali smo sa Beta verzijom), dolazi i podrška za pet monitora postavljenih u portrait mod, što će po tvrdnjama iz AMD-a biti idelalan setup za nadolazeći Dragon Age 2 naslov, a tu je i HD3D podrška. Spomenuti Catalysti 11.4 donose nova poboljšanja i novosti u odnosu na postojeće upravljačke programe. Tako su izmjenjeni pojedini meniji, konfiguracija Eyefinitya je intuitivnija, dodana ja vizualna pomoć korisniku, obavještavanje o novoj verziji programa, a nova je i branding shema. Ukoliko imate AMD-ov APU, ili AMD-ov CPU + GPU, te PowerXpress A+A tada se upravljačka ploča naziva AMD Vision Engine Control Center, ukoliko imate AMD Workstation (FirePro, FireStream) tada se zove Catalyst pro Control Center, a za sve ostale slučajeve ostaje naziv CCC.
