Vozimo 100MHz na sat

Vratit ćemo se u vrijeme kada je izašao danas već legendarni i440BX chipset. BX je imao sve, FSB (Front Side Bus) od 100MHz, AGP 2x (Advanced Graphics Port) i podršku za procesore od 350 i 400 MHz koji su pušteni na tržište u isto vrijeme. Bili su to Pentium II Deschutes procesori, s novom jezgrom izrađenom u 0.25µm tehnologiji, veliki korak naprijed od stare 0.35 mikronske izrade Klamath jezgre. Najbitnije, BX je bio treća i posljednja generacija solidnog produkta bez greške. Došao je iza LX chipseta, prvog s AGP sabirnicom, a koji je zapravo bio proširenje HX serije chipseta za Pentium Pro procesor.

Pentium Pro je za Intel bio veliki korak naprijed. Iako taj procesor, što se tiče prodaje, nije uspio, otvorio je put za sve nove Intelove procesore do danas, uključujući i još nedostupni Pentium IV. Ovdje već leži jedan od odgovora na pitanje zašto Intel gubi utrku s današnjom konkurencijom - P6 arhitektura procesora. Arhitektura Pentium II, Pentium III kao i Pentium IV procesora nije bitno mijenjana od Pentium Pro procesora. Taj procesor, iako također unaprijeđena Pentium/multi486 arhitektura, imao je jednu ogromnu tehnološku razliku od svoje starije braće - integrirani L2 cache pune brzine. Do tada, to je bilo viđano samo na puno skupljim i velikim multiprocesorskim sistemima.

Ubrzo, Intel je najavio Pentium III procesor, pa krenuo na posao da ga i napravi. Što se Intela tiče, to nije bio preveliki zadatak. Trebalo je samo dodati nekoliko novih naredbi u mikrokod i jezgru, skinuti stražnju stranu oklopa procesora i na prednju dodati još jedno slovo I. Ništa lakše. Samo, uz novi procesor potreban je i novi chipset za matične ploče.

Malo celera nikad ne škodi

U međuvremenu, Intel je napravio prvu malu grešku u našoj priči. Na tu grešku ga je direktno natjerao AMD (Advanced Micro Devices), u tom trenutku u financijskim gubicima i Intelu skoro nevažan protivnik. AMD se spremao izbaciti KIII procesor, a i prodaja prethodnika KII išla je razmjerno dobro.

Iako nikakva konkurencija u srednjoj i visokoj klasi računala, tj. radnih stanica, AMD-u je rasla prodaja u nižoj, tj. klasi jednostavnih PC-a. Kako bi zauzeo i taj dio tržišta, i zadao konačni udarac AMD-u, Intel je predstavio Celeron procesor na 266 i 300 MHz. Celeron je bio napravljen iz iste jezgre kao i PII Deschutes, samo bez vanjske cache memorije. Po Intelovom službenom razvojnom planu sljedeći Celeron bio je barem šest mjeseci daleko.

Kupci, kao i novinari, novi Celeron nisu prihvatili objeručke. Iako relativno dobar za uredske aplikacije i igranje - zbog brze FPU (Floating Point Unit) jedinice, prodaja je bila loša. Naprotiv, AMD-u je i dalje rasla prodaja njihovih procesora. Intel se brzo izvukao iz te situacije. Ono što se na tržištu trebalo pojaviti za nekoliko mjeseci, pojavilo se skoro odmah - Celeron s integriranim cacheom od 128KB. Procesor je bio instant hit i Intel je opet vodio u svim segmentima tržišta.
