Intel - brzina bez opreza

Dr. Intel & Mr. Rambus

Vratimo se na događaje vezane uz Intel-u prijeko potreban chipset za novi PIII. Ovdje u priču ulazi Rambus, jedna malo poznata firma do toga dana - firma koja je Intelu vrijedila puno novaca. Samo u tom trenutku to se još nije znalo. Ono što se znalo, bilo je da će novi chipset moći raditi samo s Rambus memorijom. Također, da Rambus neće proizvoditi Rambus memoriju. Od ovoga trenutka događaji se kompliciraju.

Intel i Rambus su stvari fino zamislili. Rambus je smislio sučelje chipset - memorija, kao i protokol za prijenos podataka. Intel stoji iza toga svojom veličinom i apsolutnom industrijskom podrškom. Svi ostali rade, proizvode memoriju i plaćaju im licence na količinu. Slično kao svodnik i prostitutke. Ti radi, uzmi sitno sebi za život, a sve ostalo ide meni. Ostatak industrije, kao i krajnji kupci će to prihvatiti s općim oduševljenjem. A možda ipak neće.

Zapravo, da je Rambus memorija bila puno brža od SDRAM PC100 (Synchronous Dynamic RAM) memorije, tada najbržeg SDRAM-a, njihov trik bi možda i uspio. Samo od toga nije bilo ništa. Rambus je koštao nekoliko puta više od običnog SDRAM-a. Danas je cijena malo pala, ali i dalje je dosta veća od cijene SDRAM-a. Brzina kontinuiranog prijenosa podataka bila je i do dva-tri puta brža od SDRAM-a, ali latentnost je bila ista, skoro i veća. Ako gledamo relativno, latentnost je bila puno veća u odnosu na SDRAM. U praksi to znači da, ako radite s velikim blokovima podataka na višeprocesorskim mašinama, Rambus memorija je brža. Samo s obzirom da većina aplikacija na PC-ima obično radi s puno manjih blokova podataka, SDRAM je bio brži. Svi su to znali i prije nego što je Intelov novi chipset stigao na tržište. Svi osim Intel-a. Njima će ipak trebati malo vremena da priznaju.

Caminogate

Nekoliko dana prije nego što je Intel službeno trebao predstaviti i820 Camino, novi PIII chipset, vijesti o problemima s memorijom počele su kružiti naokolo. Ubrzo, službena vijest dolazi iz Intel-a: "Primijećeno je da na testovima pod opterećenjem slot 3 (rimm 3) za RDRAM modul ima problema sa sinkronizacijom." Malo bolji testovi pokazali su da i slot 2 ne stoji baš najbolje, ali prema Intelu, to je već bio problem proizvođača matičnih ploča. i820 bio je vrlo nestabilan. Naravno, druga generacija PIII procesora za 133MHz FSB s integriranim cacheom, tzv. Coppermine bila je već na tržištu. Intel je imao procesor, a ploču nije imao. Za veliki Intel to je bio ogroman udarac.

Industriji je bilo interesantno ime Coppermine. Iako na početku najavljivano, nova PIII generacija izrađena u 0.18µm procesu, nema nikakve veze s bakrom. Coppermine se u potpunosti izrađuje u aluminijskom procesu proizvodnje. Radi se o procesu dopinga silikona za izradu tranzistora i vodova na silikonskoj pločici. Bakreni proces je tehnološki napredniji, i danas skuplji, ali omogućava veće brzine i manju potrošnju struje.

Mali brat i820 chipseta - i810 - bio je dostupan na tržištu, samo taj chipset po Intel-u nije bio namijenjen onim korisnicima na koje je ciljao Coppermine. To je bio chipset za jednostavna i jeftina računala, s integriranom grafikom i UMA (Unified Memory Arhitecture) tehnologijom. i810 nije bio platforma za jaka računala. A problemima s i820 nije bio kraj.

Intel je uspio promašiti i drugi datum kada je obećao pustiti i820 u prodaju. Sučelje i komunikacija chipseta i RDRAM na 400MHz sve se više pokazivalo kao vrlo tvrd orah. Takvu priliku Intelova konkurencija nije mogla propustiti. Via, proizvođač chipova s Taiwan-a, uskočila je na tržište s svojim Apollo Pro (prvo 693A, a zatim 694A) chipsetom, s punom podrškom za 133MHz magistralu i gotovo svim naprednim funkcijama koje je i820 trebao imati. Intel je jedino imao stari BX, koji je još pokazivao da ga vrijeme ipak nije pregazilo. Bio je brži od Via chipseta u većini testova, kao i u stvarnim aplikacijama.
