AMD Athlon XP Thoroughbred 2400+ aka "Nova nada"

Za nedavna posjeta INFO 2002 izložbi na štandu HGspota za oko nam je zapeo AMD Athlon XP Thoroughbred 2400+ procesor. Kako mi po običaju nemamo dlake na jeziku i poznati smo bestidnosti oko žicanja hardvera, dotični procesor smo vrlo brzo uspjeli dobiti na test. Nova linija AMD-ovih procesora ima ulogu popunjavanja rupe u proizvodnim linijama između Palominoa i Bartona. Retrospektivno gledano, AMD-ov razvojni ciklus SocketA procesora je tekao na slijedeći način: Thunderbird, prva jezgra za SocketA Athlone, nakon nje Palomino jezgra (prvi Athlon XP), pa onda Thoroughbred jezgra s kojom se prešlo na 0.13 mikronski proces proizvodnje. Ta Thoroughbred jezgra (kasnije joj je dodana oznaka "A") nije rezultirala očekivanim performansama i kvalitetom. Maksimalna brzina je, unatoč očekivanjima, bila samo 1800 MHz (tj. PR 2200+) što je bio porast od samo 66 MHz u odnosu na brzinu najbržeg Palomino Athlona (XP 2100+, 1733 MHz).

Novi Athlon pod flešom

Sa prelaskom na novu jezgru smanjena je i površina iste sa 128 na 80 mm2 što je značilo da je toplinska disipacija novih Athlona mogla postati još veći problem. Ovdje u igru ulazi još jedna razlika između Thoroughbred "A" i Palomino jezgre, a to je broj slojeva silicijskih vodova na jezgri. Što ih je više to je čišći signal između raznih komponenti procesora (cache memorija, logičke jedinice i sl.). Thunderbird Athloni su imali 6 slojeva vodova, Palomino Athloni 7 slojeva, a na Thoroughbredu "A" ih je 8. Na ovaj način je postignuta manja toplinska disipacija od prethodne serije procesora, a ona je također i direktna posljedica smanjenja visine napona na kojoj procesori rade (opet zbog broja silicijskih slojeva) na 1.65 V. Naravno, sve je to lijepo i krasno, ali opet se vraćamo na problem brzine. Uz poboljšanje procesa izrade, prelaskom na finije waffere (0.13 mikrona), porast takta nije bio ni blizu očekivanom dok je Intel žario i palio sa PIV na 2.53 GHz. Situacija je postajala sve bezizlaznija, čak je bilo planirano rano izdavanje Barton baziranih Athlona, dok iz AMD-ovog FAB-a 30 (Dresden, Njemačka) nije stigla optimistična vijest.

Novi Athlon i stari Duron

Proizvodni proces Thoroughbred baziranih procesora je dodatno poboljšan, dodan je još jedan sloj vodova (deveti) i maksimalna brzina procesora je naglo porasla. Nova jezgra nazvana je Thorughbred "B" i postala je AMD-ova "nova nada" (Star Wars, hehe). Veličina jezgre se opet promijenila i porasla sa 80 na 84 mm2. Brzina "starih" Thoroughbreda, od 1700+ do 2200+ (čini mi se da ih ima i kod nas) je komplemetirana novom serijom procesora brzine od 2400+ do 2800+ (stvarne brzine od 2 do 2.25 GHz). Trenutno poznati modeli su 2400+ (2 GHz), 2600+ (2.133 GHz), 2600+ (2.083 GHz, 333 FSB), 2700+ (2.167 GHz) i 2800+ (2.25 GHz). Treba naglasiti da modeli od 2600+ nadalje rade na 333 MHz sabirnici dok naš testni procesor (inženjerski primjerak) 2400+, još uvijek radi na 266 MHz sabirnici s množiteljem 15. Ako ste zbunjeni postojanjem dva 2600+ modela ne brinite se jer svi su zbunjeni s time. S druge strane informacije o modelima su točne koliko mogu biti budući da potiču iz AMD-ovih tehničkih dokumenata. Općenito, glavne razlike između Palomino i Thoroughbred "B" baziranih Athlon XP procesora su viši takt, manja površina jezgre, niži napon potreban za rad, manja toplinska disipacija, veći broj silicijskih vodljivih slojeva, interna termalna sonda i kod bržih modela, 333 MHz sabirnica. Dosta više teorije, krenimo na testiranje!
