Na test nam je stigao još sredinom prošle godine predstavljen Toshibin RC100 NVMe SSD u M.2 Type 2242-S3-B-M formatu. Drugim riječima, to je maleni 42-milimetarski SSD, koji ima i M-Key i B-key kompatibilnost što je vrlo bitno jer povećava kompatibilnost. S obzirom na maleno pakiranje i BiCS Flash tehnologiju, RC100 je i povoljan. Ovakvi SSD-u koriste PCIe x2 vezu za komunikaciju pa zahtijevaju dvije PCI stazice manje nego mnogi moderni M.2 SSD-i, no imaju i manji bandwidth - 10 vs. 20 Gbps.

Disk dolazi u malenom kartonskom pakiranju na kojem se nalaze grafike uređaja i bitnije informacije kao što je podatak o trogodišnjem jamstvu. Unutar kutije je SSD položen u blister ležište, a tu su i upute za instalaciju i brzi početak korištenja na nekoliko svjetskih jezika.

Uređaj je vrlo malen pa ga je najbolje usporediti s 2280 SSD-om. Malo više od polovice je njegove dužine (42 milimetra), a vidimo i da ima drugačiji konektor. Veći ima M key, a RC100 ima M+B key, pa je kompatibilan s dva tipa utora. To ujedno znači i da je ograničen na PCIe x2 vezu, tj. propusnost od 10 Gbps. Nama je na test stigao primjerak s najmanjim kapacitetom u ponudi (120 GB), a osim njega u ponudi su i 240 te 480 GB verzije.

Uređaj je zanimljiv jer ima tzv. single package dizajn, pri čemu su i kontroler i NAND memorija smješteni u isto pakiranje. Korišten je 64-slojni TLC BiCS NAND FLASH koji je jeftiniji i smanjuje cijenu, a uz to je ovaj sistem i DRAM-less principa što dodatno snižava kompleksnost proizvoda i cijenu. Zato RC100 podržava Host Memory Buffer tehnologiju kao i Transcendov 110S SSD. Kod HMB-a se mapping tablica drži u radnoj memoriji računala umjesto u dediciranom DRAM-u na samom SSD-u.

Proizvođač navodi općenite performanse za sve modele - sekvencijalno čitanje do 1.600 MB/s, sekvencijalni zapis do 1.100 MB/s, nasumično čitanje do 150.000 IOPS-a, i nasumični zapis do 110.000 IOPS-a. Izdržljivost je do 240 TBW. Ove vrijednosti se sve najvjerojatnije odnose na 480 GB model, pa su za ovaj najmanji sigurno niže. Sučelje je PCIE 3.1a specifikacije, a protokol je NVMe 1.2.1. Proizvođač navodi potrošnju u aktivnom stanju od 3.2 W, a MTTF je jedan milijun sati.

Uz svaki se Toshibin SSD može skinuti i koristiti SSD Utility uz pomoć kojeg nadziremo parametre rada, omogućen nam je benchmark diska i nadogradnja firmwarea. S obzirom na malene gabarite i jedinstveno pakiranje kontrolera i NAND-a zagrijavanje nije pretjerano, no kao i svaki drugi ovakav SSD, potrebno ga je pasivno ili aktivno hladiti. Mi smo ispod aluminijskog hladnjaka na testnoj ploči i bez ikakve aktivne pomoći ventilatora zabilježili maksimalnu temperaturu od 59°C što je u granicama normale.

Način testiranja

Disk smo testirali na Intelovoj novoj Z390 platformi, tj. ASRockovoj Z390 Phantom Gaming 9 ploči i s i7-8700K procesorom. Radio je u PCIe 3.0 x2 modu s NVMe driverima. Uz sve standardne testove koje provodimo tu je i simulacija četiriju situacija uz pomoć I/O Metera – Database sa 67% čitanja i 33% zapisa, Workstation s 80% čitanja i 20% zapisa, Web Servera sa 100% čitanja i File Servera s 80% čitanja i 20% zapisa, nakon čega ispisujemo broj izmjerenih IOPS-a. Savjeti za svakodnevnu operativu SSD-a pod Windows OS-om uključuju isključivanje stvari kao što su indeksiranje diska, zatim isključivanje prefetcha i Superfetcha te defragmentiranja koje je sasvim nepotrebno.

Rezultati testova - drugi dio

I AS SSD i Cyrstal koriste nekompresibilne podatke, a mjerenja su im nešto drugačija. Kao što vidimo i rezultati su ponešto drugačiji, pogotovo kod sekvencijalnog zapisa. 4K performanse su očekivano niske. Ovo jasno nije prirodno okruženje za RC100, no test je dobar pokazatelj performansi i onoga što zapravo najviše odgovara ovom SSD-u. A to je kao što vidimo test sa 80% čitanja i 20% zapisa u kojem je ostvario najbolji I/O rezultat, no ne može se reći ni da je u ostalim mjerenjima loš, pogotovo stoga što i nije puno sporiji od Transcendovog 110S koji je PCIe x4 SSD. Transfer podataka [ichart headers="ID,MB/s" htitle="Transfer 29.7 GB podataka"  labels="S drugog diska na RC100, S RC100 na RC100" values="45.49,23.96" colors="orange,blue" height="200" min="0"] U ovom "real life" testu smo najprije s Corsairovog Neutron XT 480 GB SATA III diska prebacili 29.7 GB (31.923 MB) podataka (kombinacija velikih i vrlo malih 22.246 fajlova), a zatim napravili identičnu kopiju na disku. Performanse su vrlo slabe i ovdje se vidi sporost RC 100 diska i njegovog DRAM-less koncepta.

Toshibin je RC100 maleni DRAM-less SSD koji komunicira putem PCIe x2 sučelja i NVMe protokolom. Sintetičke su performanse pokazale da ima solidne performanse čitanja, no da će zapis biti malo problematičan. Tako je i bilo u real-life testovima koje smo proveli. 30-tak gigabajta što većih što manjih fajlova pokazalo se problematično kada se kopira sa samog sebe, dok je još kopiranje s drugog diska i bilo koliko toliko podnošljivo. No, ovaj disk će zapravo rijetko tko koristiti za puno zapisa, pa će kao kakav sistemski disk u računalu ili prijenosniku s laganim zadaćama zapravo biti adekvatan. Malene dimenzije, NVMe, podrška za dva tipa Keya (B i M), i prihvatljiva cijena su ono što ovaj disk čini poželjnim. Na domaćem mu tržištu nismo našli cijenu, a na njemačkom se ona za ovaj 120 GB model kreće od oko 50 €, što je vrlo konkurentno s obzirom da je riječ o NVMe uređaju.
